I've set myself an 'Alphabet Challenge' for 2018.
Each week I will move through the alphabet and make a piece of art related to whichever letter I have reached. It might be a tv show, film, character or ship - whatever pops into my head.
On to week 11 and we've got to 'K' and there was really only one option, Kirk, James T.
I love Star Trek and the original series will always be my favourite. I grew up watching this and other classic sci-fi so it will always have a special place in my sci-fi archive.
I wanted to make the challenge a little harder so I went for 'Where No Man Has Gone Before'
because they were still using the uniforms from the (at the time) un-aired pilot 'The Cage' so they weren't as obvious as the ones used for the rest of the show.
I also wanted to mix things up a bit and do a greyscale challenge.
So, we have the moment where Gary Mitchell is using his powers to force Kirk to pray to him.

"Pray to me!"
"To you. Not to both of you?"
"Pray that you die easily!"
"There'll only be one of you in the end. One jealous god. If all this makes a god or does it make you something else."
"You last chance, Kirk."
"You like what you see? Absolute power, corrupting absolutely!"

Cue Elizabeth zapping Mitchell with her developing powers and the ever popular Trek staple of 'a fist fight in some sand where Kirk's shirt gets ripped open'
There were some great guesses this week but between Rose-Hunter , KingdomMay , rjler and cmcougar we got there in the end so well done folks. Going to have to try and stump you all with next week's one.
Done with polychromos pencils and built up in layers, utilising my pressure application and layering techniques, the picture consists of 10 colours.
Kirk's eyes were done with white dark sepia, warm grey 1 and warm grey 2.
His eyebrows were done with dark sepia and warm grey 4.
His nose was done with Payne's grey, warm grey 1, warm grey 2, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
His mouth was done with white, black, warm grey 4, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
Hi ears were done with white, warm grey 1, warm grey 4 and warm grey 5.
His skin was done with Payne's grey, black, warm grey 1, warm grey 2, warm grey 4, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
His hair was done with Payne's grey, black , warm grey 1, warm grey 4 and warm grey 6.
His uniform was done with white, Payne's grey, black, warm grey 1, warm grey 3, warm grey 4, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
The rocks and sand were done with black, Payne's grey, warm grey 1, warm grey 2, warm grey 3, warm grey 4, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
The background was done with black, warm grey 3, warm grey 4, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.

Yes, the soft focus technique works really well, especially if you want the eye drawn to a specific part of the image, in this case - Kirk.
If I had hyper detailed the rocks and plants behind him, he would've been lost in the image itself and it would've taken a lot of the 'feeling' of the picture away.
Thanks and you're welcome

Yes, clothing folds are always fun. The veins were a little trickier and I did blend away most of them.

nah!! I 'm literally obsessed with realism. Am I the best at realism? not really but I love the style

to be able to draw realism needs a lot of skills

It's taken me a long time to get to the level I'm at now and a lot of projects. I'm still learning new stuff as I go which is what makes it so much fun.
I've always loved it because I love detail work.
All those little lines, shapes and colour variations that make images work are fascinating to me
My art teacher taught us to 'always look for what's not supposed to be there', that one line, that odd colour that needs to be present to make the whole thing work.
It's like adding grey of blue to white to make it stand out or highlighting an area by light-lining the edges and not using another colour.
Things like that I find really fun so challenges like this make art more interesting for me.

Magic-study In reply to Starfire-Productions [2018-03-22 15:46:08 +0000 UTC]

My art teacher always told me see between the lines too. For me, I really like realism colored works, esp oil. I love to play with the lighting to tell a story

It makes the whole piece interesting too

Starfire-Productions In reply to Magic-study [2018-03-22 18:34:35 +0000 UTC]

I think it's the best way to approach realism to look at it as a series of interconnected small shapes and colours that, when you step back, make the whole thing.

I'll leave the painting to you. Paint and I have an understanding: we leave each other alone and the world stays safe.
I can certainly see that in your pictures. Autumn walk has some beautiful colours and tones in it!
Had to fave that one!

True, interesting stuff makes the projects worthwhile

Magic-study In reply to Starfire-Productions [2018-03-23 02:37:26 +0000 UTC]

hahaha you flatter me Thank you~

I totally agree with your statement of interconnected pieces It's all a part of a puzzle

Starfire-Productions In reply to Magic-study [2018-03-23 08:48:25 +0000 UTC]

It's a great picture and you're much better with paints that I am
Reminds me of the woods near the house where I grew up.

I know right. People often say you have to approach art in a specific way. You must see these lines or shapes and then round out, shade, plan etc etc but I've never done that.
I automatically translate the image into tiny components, find one that catches my eye and work outward from there, looking for all the little shapes joining together.
Yes, very much like the edges of puzzle pieces fitting together until you get the whole image.
Still, with faces I always work the same way for mapping out just to get them right but the rest is a shape connected exercise

Magic-study In reply to Starfire-Productions [2018-03-23 16:52:11 +0000 UTC]

People definitely don't approach art in a specific way. If we were to do that, there won't be picasso or monet.

Although I do have to say it is beneficial to start in a specific way. (i.e. when learning how to shade and stuff) However, once you learn that, it's good to deviate from that

My thing is to get the concept down flat so that you have a foundation and then work your way to get your own approach on works and stuff like that

Starfire-Productions In reply to Magic-study [2018-03-23 17:58:05 +0000 UTC]

Well, according to folks who have put their two pence worth in on my art, apparently I'm doing it all wrong.
My position is that it may not be how they do it, but it's how I do it

Yes, we all need a sound grasp of the basics, form, shading, position, layout, tones - but after that it's always best to do things in the way you find the easiest to do what you're trying to get out onto the paper.

I have a good memory that is naturally photographic for a lot of things, especially things I see and things I really enjoy, so my reference is usually in my head.
That does make the job a whole lot easier

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Magic-study In reply to Starfire-Productions [2018-03-23 19:32:06 +0000 UTC]

Hey you do you~ It definitely is how you do your art hahaha as long as it works, why not

That's awesome! I wish that my reference are in my head, but I have terrible memories hahaha most of my references came from photos that I took~ the very few times that's from my brain always ended up a bit weird lol You definitely have a blessing with your memory

Starfire-Productions In reply to Magic-study [2018-03-23 21:48:04 +0000 UTC]

I just find it really funny when people argue and say it's impossible to do things that way
We all have our own approach to art, it's just what we do.

Well, it's a blessing and a curse. You can remember stuff, but you remember all of it.
This is not always a good thing.

As long as you get the result you want, the journey is the fun part for each of us.
How we take that journey, that's the question.

Yep. Especially when you've worked in the medical profession for years!
