I've set myself an 'Alphabet Challenge' for 2018.
Each week I will move through the alphabet and make a piece of art related to whichever letter I have reached. It might be a tv show, film, character or ship - whatever pops into my head.
So, week 3 and we have 'C' and the first thing that sprang to mind was 'Cylons'. Always loved those robots! Something else tying in that begins with C is Caprica so I settled on doing the first Cybernetic Life-form Node prototype from the show.
We've had some great guesses on the WIPs for this one. While most people guessed the 'mechanical' aspect to it no-one guessed what it was. Ideas from Warhammer mechs to Transformers and my personal favourite, a mechanical elephant
Done with polychromos pencils and built up in layers, utilising my pressure application and layering techniques, the picture consists of 16 colours.
The Cylon's eye was done with white, light flesh, dark red and deep red.
The Cylon's head was done with white, dark sepia, brown ochre (dark), black, cold grey 3, warm grey 4 and warm grey 6.
The Cylon's body was done with white, dark sepia, nougat, brown ochre (dark), terracotta, black, cold grey 3, green gold, warm grey 4, warm grey 5 and warm grey 6.
The smoke was done with ivory, dark sepia, raw umber, brown ochre (dark) and warm grey 4
The background was done with cold grey 6.

Completion time: 12 hours 41 minutes

Starfire-Productions In reply to ??? [2018-07-29 08:28:41 +0000 UTC]

I stopped doing comic style work years ago when I focused on realism.
I do it occasionally for fun but I enjoy working with the polys too much>
I'll stick to writing instead

I get you ı tried my luck at comics years ago. Didnt work out

with the experience I got from comic stuff I stuck to metal art works. Its fun to do but takes time.

Well, every artist finds the medium that works best for them - just go for it
Haven't done any metal work / metal art since secondary school.

Oh! This is what it was! If I had known you'd already posted this, I wouldn't have commented on the other post... lol. But it seems my guess would have been nearly correct! I love this! You are so good at art! I can't wait to see what is next!

Lol - no worries
Yeah, everyone went with mechanical but no-one got the Cylon.
Thanks, that's very kind.
Well, we're on week 7 now and the WIP for that is already posted

You're welcome!

Awesome! I will have to give it a look-see!

Amazing and spooky! The Cylons from the old series used to scare me. This one is even scarier.

I loved the classic Centurions but these were a bridge between those and the updated ones we saw in the new BSG.
While nothing beats the classic chrome Cylons, the prototype was an awesome design.
I have a figure of one in my collection

Arrrh. Beware the Tinnies! Great job as always. Only saw a few episodes as it was on too late at night. Certainly different from the originals of the 1970's.

Toasters with attitude
thanks.
The classic Centurions were awesome but it was nice to see the Caprica version as a bridge between the two designs.

I didn't see Caparica...did the red light rove back and forth? please tell me it did!!!
Enjoying your work- thanks for sharing it.

Rose-Hunter [2018-01-19 14:49:19 +0000 UTC]

is that from the new Battlestar Galactica?  Or the old one?

because I never watched the old one

it looks like it's from the new one  *goes to look it up*

Oh!  it's from the Caprica series!

I never saw that one

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Starfire-Productions In reply to Rose-Hunter [2018-01-19 14:55:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, it does say that it's from Caprica in the description - lol

Yes, Caprica is the prequel to the rebooted BSG. It was a good show and the creation of the original Cylons, or Cybernetic Lifeform Nodes, was a nice idea.

I will probably go back and do a classic Cylon Centurion at some point, it will give me an excuse to use the metallic pencils.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rose-Hunter In reply to Starfire-Productions [2018-01-19 15:30:43 +0000 UTC]

I thought Caprica was the name of an episode of Battlestar Galactica at first

but I looked it up and saw that it was a series

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Starfire-Productions In reply to Rose-Hunter [2018-01-19 15:37:30 +0000 UTC]

Well, BSG ran for 4 years with a couple of movies and web series.
Caprica went back to before the fall and started to fill in the back story. Only ran for 1 year which was a shame.

Rose-Hunter In reply to Starfire-Productions [2018-01-19 15:57:10 +0000 UTC]

only 1 season    that sux

it was pretty much the same with Firefly too (only 1 season)

I really liked Firefly

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Starfire-Productions In reply to Rose-Hunter [2018-01-20 12:17:46 +0000 UTC]

Most of the issue was because that 1 series was broken up and shown over 2 years.
The pilot movie, a year before the first 8 episodes and then another year before the last 9.
Totally killed the show's momentum and hastened it's end.

Firefly rocks!

Rose-Hunter In reply to Starfire-Productions [2018-01-20 14:14:41 +0000 UTC]

  yeah

fox seemed to do their best to get the show poor ratings as well

my younger brother tried to watch it on television while we had it (we don't have cable anymore), and fox kept changing the time at which the show was aired and they showed episodes out of order

it was a circus

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Starfire-Productions In reply to Rose-Hunter [2018-01-20 14:42:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, at least we got one series of it.
If it had come out now it probably would've done well on Netflix.

And Shepherd Book

Still, it makes for a more realistic story if only some of the heroes make it.

him too

and I guess you're right

after all, they were fighting reavers

reavers are pretty bad in that universe

Starfire-Productions In reply to Rose-Hunter [2018-01-20 14:52:30 +0000 UTC]

Still, there's a couple of graphic novels that fill in the gaps.
