I've set myself an 'Alphabet Challenge' for 2018.
Each week I will move through the alphabet and make a piece of art related to whichever letter I have reached. It might be a tv show, film, character or vehicle - whatever pops into my head.
Moving along we've now reached 'O' and I wanted to go classic with something a little obscure to see if anyone would get it and the Ovions from the original Battlestar just sprang to mind.
We had some good guesses and ideas this week but no-one got the right answer.
These creatures were mining Tylium for those with the cubits but also had a nasty tendency to capture people who came to their planet and let their young eat them as they grew from their larval state into full grown insectoids.
I wasn't happy with some of the brown tones I used to start so I just went over them with the darker greys and added some layers and they came out much better. As I had other more complex projects to do at this time, which you'll see some of next week, I didn't spend as much time on this one so it's not my best work either.
Done with polychromos pencils and built up in layers, utilising my pressure application and layering techniques, the picture consists of 19 colours.
The Ovion queen's carapace was done with white, ivory, dark sepia, nougat, brown ochre (dark), cinnamon, Venetian red, black and cold grey 5.
Her eye was done with white, ivory, light yellow glaze and zinc yellow.
Her clothes were done with white, ivory, cinnamon, Venetian red, black, cold grey 5 and burnt umber.
Her mesh was done with white, ivory, brown ochre (dark), cinnamon, Venetian red, black
Her chair was done with ivory, nougat, cinnamon and burnt umber.
The Ovion servitor was done with brown ochre (dark), black, cold grey 4 and warm grey 6.
It's mesh was done with dark sepia, nougat and cold grey 5.
The bowl of food was done with ivory, raw umber, Payne's grey, sanguine and warm grey 6.
The background cloth was done with white, ivory, dark sepia and bistre.

Completion time: 10 hours 19 minutes.

Nice work, I've never actually heard of these guys before but they are a very cool design (but then again, always loved insectoid designs myself!), and as always, very nicely drawn. Keep up the good work!

p.s. will get to the notes later. Been busy!

Thanks
Yeah, there used to be a little acion figure of them in the 70's toy line, despite the fact they were only in two episodes / the movie and didn't get that much screen time.

No worries.

Sounds cool! Well, at least they got screen time I guess, I can think of some sci-fi characters and vehicles that got made into toys which never made it into movies or even official canon of said franchises. One only needs to look at Star Wars to see this, as I imagine you would know all too well

Yeah, there's always that character that was in the background for 2 seconds' that gets made into a figure or something from a deleted scene that makes it into toy form.

The Stargate toys from 1994 had a whole section of the range devoted to a scene that was written out and reshot with the dune buggies and Ra's chariot.

I thought that looked like an arm    I was right

but I don't recognize the show because I never saw it

nice one though

Starfire-Productions In reply to Rose-Hunter [2018-04-13 15:09:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes, with the Ovions having 4 arms I'd have to start somewhere with the limbs.

The original Battlestar Galactica is already on your watch list after our discussion on week 9

Thanks

That's a rather... interesting creature. Makes me wish I watched the entire series.
But I'm still glad I guessed the anatomy of that thing correctly.

Starfire-Productions In reply to KingdomMay [2018-04-13 11:51:29 +0000 UTC]

You got the anatomy right but this is classic 70's sci-fi so you'd either get it from that eye or it would be a mystery
