I've set myself an 'Alphabet Challenge' for 2018.
Each week I will move through the alphabet and make a piece of art related to whichever letter I have reached. It might be a tv show, film, character or ship - whatever pops into my head.
So, week 7 and we have 'G' and immediately this voice in my head said "Me Grimlock KING!". Fair enough big guy! I love Transformers but the original G1 is my favourite so went with that version of the big bozo.
Also good to have a quick and easy animated image as I have other projects to do at this time so I didn't have to spend too much time doing this one.
Done with polychromos pencils and built up in layers, utilising my pressure application and layering techniques, the picture consists of 29 colours.
Grimlock was done with white, lemon, light ultramarine, cobalt blue-greenish, dark sepia, raw umber, Payne's grey, black, deep red, dark red, cold grey 1, cold grey 3, warm grey 1 and warm grey 6.
The cityscape was done with white, ultramarine, delft blue, light phthalo blue, sky blue, helioblue reddish, peacock blue, cobalt green, permanent green olive, earth green, Payne's grey, black, cadmium yellow lemon, cold grey 5, Prussian blue, mauve, permanent green, warm grey 1 and warm grey 6.
The stars were done with white and light phtahlo blue.
The sky was done with blue violet and black.
Completion time: 4 hours 27 minutes

There's a distinct look to the 80's G1 Transformers and that is to include white or lightest colour version of the main colour near the border lines on each individual shape.

Pretty much all 80's cartoons followed the same rule for art.
It's weird because if you don't put them in it just looks wrong even though you'd think you wouldn't notice them

that's pretty cool! I've never considered how much care and planning goes into cartoon concepts, but I love finding about about the inspiration behind characters and the world created for them. It's cool how different art styles and colors choices really make or break the execution of an art style

It's just noticing all those little elements in certain styles that makes them work.
As a realism and detail artist, I'm always looking for things like that so I can make the image come to life.
Having just completed a CGI animated style piece for Week 10, that was a whole different approach in angles and lines

It's kinda funny that the background is more detailed than the character itself.
I'll try even harder at guessing for 'H' theme next week.

Well, the Dinobots were very simply drawn but colourful.
It's sort of like the reverse of when I do animal pictures and use a soft focus for the background to make them stand out.
As for H, it could be anything......

I love the 80's style and animation from that decade really works for me. The little white in black lines that they used back then are often ignored for the clean and smooth look today. It's those little imperfections that make it look better, but that's just my opinion on the animation.

As good as they look, I just can't stand the dialogue. I hate having Five Cheese Cheesy Bread coming out of the screen.
