Description
For Xxxx, to accompany the painting on handmade paper.
Yoga is very popular right now. Everyone wants to do yoga but not many want to be yoga. To me yoga is about balance, harmony, finding something inside that is stronger than what is outside.
Asian symbols are very popular. People get tattoos of “soy sauce,” “entry in rear,” or “kick my ass” and think it means something deep and powerful thinking they wrote “I am Woman,” “Megamacho,” or “Conquer in Peace.” I have seen a lot of yin and yang symbols on people that are out of balance. I purposely chose to corrupt yin and yang with earth and water to symbolize our planet. Then fire and water to wrap up the elements. All total there are eight colors in the painting; violet, blue, white, green, yellow, brown, red, orange.
I chose the circle to represent something more organic than industrial. Making paper is an ancient art, predating the industrial age by millennia. It is very organic, the earth elements; water, plant fiber, the dyes all very elemental, combined with labor of the hands; dirty, smelly, messy; drying to become something of a platform to communicate, to pass on ideas to the future.
The objects in the painting are disharmonious and out of balance. They could be better combined in the hands of a less handicapped artisan. But isn’t that the point? We all possess something inside that desires to get out, to communicate our value to the universe and we are constantly failing to do so. Even our pencils get dull trying to be clear. The concepts are there. We are striving. So we begin to stretch and breathe, to move in a more graceful manner, to pull our bodies all the while clearing our mind to think of nothing so we can be. We may or may not arrive. Tomorrow we try again.
All the best on the path.
