Description At least, that's how Haapsalu sees it. XD Not to mention Finland is practically family...!

In September, 1939, Soviet demanded the right to establish military bases in Estonia (then independent), as well as in the other two Baltic states and Finland. Soviet pressured Estonia by threatening war and accusing Estonia for being anti-Soviet and helped a Polish submarine escape despite claiming to be neutral in the ongoing WW2 (later, when Soviet occupied Estonia, they used the submarine's escape as an excuse for their occupation. In reality, Soviet had already decided to occupy the country beforehand). Estonia yielded and the first Soviet military troops arrived in Estonia in 18th October, 1939. Soviet kept putting pressure on Estonia and demanded changes (ex. changing the Estonian government to a more Soviet-friendly one and etc), which ultimately led Estonia to become a part of the Soviet union. Similar fates befell Latvia and Lithuania.

Meanwhile, Finland was initially open to the idea of some small border changes, but refused to agree to some other demands. Soviet was not open for negotiation however and withdrew from the nonaggression pact between them after the Finnish military killed four of Soviet's soldiers - the attack was later revealed to have been orchestered by the Soviets themselves and was merely an excuse to feed the propaganda against Finland. After that the Soviet military dropped bombs on Helsinki (the capital of Finland) in November 30th, Finland declared war and the Winter war started.

Finland and Estonia had previously had a military cooperation pact, but Estonia withdrew from it due to pressure from the Soviet union. When the Winter war began, Soviet carried out bombing raids from the military bases they had in Estonia (going against Estonia's neutrality and a previous agreement they had made). In Haapsalu, the Estonians managed to decipher Soviet's secret military code and thus warned the Finns of the bombing raids through a communication system they had established back when their militaries were still cooperating.

Haapsalu's contact with Finland was discovered eventually, but Soviet couldn't find the ones responsible, so she got away with it...! Lucky...!

I have no idea how military radio communication works, much less how they worked and looked like in the 30-40ies, so sorry if all the communications' devices are wrong. orz orz

Ohhhh a new historical update! I never knew about this aspect of the Winter War. It seems as if Haapsalu's talented with decryption, wow! (but if she were caught...)
I find Finland's character during the Winter War very interesting. He's usually so sweet and then when you mess with him...
haha I always love your history comics <33

There were a handful of Estonian volunteers on Finland's side (in secret. Because Estonia was supposed to be "neutral". XD Estonians kept fighting on Finland's side against Soviet in the Continuation war too). Later, Estonia had to pick between joining Soviet or Nazi Germany. It was a "lose/lose" situation. >_> But many who went to Germany's side fought on the Finns' side and made sure to only wear the Finnish uniform and not the German one. So they kinda avoided having to pick between the other two. eue But yeah, Estonia and Finland worked together in the wars around the 30-40ies. Even when the Estonians weren't fighting, they were very much on Finland's side (like revealing Soviet war plans to them XP Neutral, huh...).

Yeah! I didn't expect that. XD Not sure if it's normal for her or just a one-time thing... She isn't really into decryption and modern technology as others are otherwise (compared to Tallinn and Hiiumaa for example, who are both talented hackers and programmers). XD

I think so too! Beware of the sweet and cute ones - they can be the most dangerous bunch. >o>; Finland proved it in the Winter war.

Thank you ~

Haha I see!
I thought you mentioned elsewhere that Hiiumaa is the trickster one? Does she ever like to hack for kicks?
you're welcome <3

Yeah, Hiiumaa is the trickster/troll of the cast. XD Hahaha! Yes, that definitely happens from time to time (and some of her mischiefs are so elaborate they trigger mini arcs of sorts). In fact, the reason why she came to love information technology so much is because it enables her to mess with the others without having to be physically present (especially with Saaremaa. Messing with Saaremaa is a favourite hobby of hers and modern technology has made it so much easier.).

So you're implying that she doesn't play pranks with a malicious intent, right? She's... the type who really loves to have fun? (Hmm, a friendly rivalry X'D)

Ah, yeah, don't worry about that - Hiiumaa's a sweetheart, really. In her opinion, laughter is one of life's biggest blessings and fortunately for her, she has plenty of it. So she's really just trying to spread some laughter around. Problem is that most of the time, most people think her humor is just plain unfunny. XD But she's always the one to make the others laugh while they're depressed or down (I imagine that she was goofing and clowning around a lot during the Soviet period for example, just so that the others could feel good for a brief moment).

Exactly! XD It's a friendly rivalry - Saaremaa gets back at her too, so it's all okay. It's just the way they show affection and love to eachother- some people show it through hugs and kisses and these two show it through hacking into the other's computer or stealing the other's wallet. Haha!
