Description This map of Wales shows its component counties and their flags. The counties are based on the traditional Welsh counties, not the modern administrative ones. I’ve used the Welsh names for the counties, but I’m not fluent, I apologise in advance if I’ve made any mistakes.

Sir Fynwy: Monmouthshire
Sir Forgannwg: Glamorganshire
Sir Gaerfyrddin: Carmarthenshire
Sir Benfro: Pembrokeshire
Sir Aberteifi: Cardiganshire
Sir Frycheiniog: Brecknockshire
Sir Faesyfed: Radnorshire
Sir Drefaldwyn: Montgomeryshire
Sir Ddinbych: Denbighshire
Sir y Fflint: Flintshire
Sir Feirionnydd: Merionethshire
Sir Gaernarfon: Caernarfonshire
Sir Fôn: Anglesey

I’ve used official or proposed flags for nine of the counties, but Montgomeryshire, Carmarthenshire and Denbighshire did not posses suitable flags, so I’ve used battle standards associated with these counties.

I’ve designed a whole new flag for Merionethshire - a tricolour in blue, green and grey, representing Cardigan Bay, Snowdonia National Park and the slate quarries of Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Were the shires based on drainage basins or were the borders more arbitrary?

To the best of my knowledge they are not based on drainage basins. I think they are based on the land held by various lords either before or after the Edwardian conquest.
