Description So I've been thinking of adding a ghost train for the FL&HPRR and here she is.

Some of you may have heard many stories about ghosts haunting the rails, from a headless foreman walking down the line with his lantern in Texas to the ghost of Abraham Lincoln's funeral train. But of course, the Fantasy Land & Happy Place Railroad has one you didn't know about until now. May I present the jinxed engine of the FL&HPRR.

Engine 13 was part of the FL&HPRR's J-35 class 2-8-0 Consolidations used primarily for freight service on branch lines, with #13 working on a branch line in the Alligator Bayou region of Fantasy Land hauling freight and sometimes local trains from time to time. She was nothing but bad luck however to the crews who operated her. Most of the unfortunate events were small, from derailing at a switch outside of a yard to her couplers breaking when pulling a train, but there were some that killed some crew members. One of them was when she was hit from the engineer side by a tractor trailer, killing her engineer and the truck driver, and another was when she rolled over her fireman due to her brakes slipping off.

Incident after incident, crews were afraid to go near or operate the 2-8-0 and even Jolene Smith, the CEO of the FL&HPRR, ordered the engine to be sidelined from service to try and put an end to the curse. But that was short lived. A few weeks after #13's retirement, the branch line she worked on was in need of power after a surprise increase in traffic and requested some engines to come and help. Jolene gulped and ordered them to get the only locomotive that was available, the #13. The 2-8-0 was soon put back into service and surprisingly, nothing happened for a good while. But then, her curse came back once more, one final time.

One rainy night, a local passenger train was in need of an engine to take some passengers to New Baton. The engineer and fireman that were available knew that #13 was the only one in steam and they have heard about the engine's past. After 15 minutes of arguing and almost being threatened to be fired, they agreed to operate her after the yard master made a deal with them. If they operate the #13 on the local, they'd get a big raise and a paid vacation. So, with plenty of steam in her boiler and coupled to some heavyweight coaches, the J-35 puffed out of the yard to New Baton with passengers aboard. That would be the last time anyone would see the crew, the passengers and the engine.

Down the line, an old wooden trestle was starting to give way over a huge body of water with alligators swimming in it. The bridge hadn't been checked recently and was in need of being replaced by a much stronger bridge due to the trains being heavier than the ones in the past, especially during the increase in traffic. A track crew came to inspect the bridge and found that it was unsafe for trains to cross. But just as they were going back to their handcart, they heard #13's whistle and realized that the train was heading towards them. Pumping hard, the track crew frantically pumped the handcart as fast as they could, with the 2-8-0 following closely behind them, whistling loudly as the engineer shouted at them to get out of the way. But then, it happened.

Halfway across the bridge, the old support beams finally gave way, sending the locomotive and 6 of the train's 8 Pullman coaches into the alligator infested water, with the track crew being unharmed and pumping to the other side of the bridge. They remember hearing the safety valve of the engine shooting steam into the air, the screams from the passengers drowning and trying to stay above the water, and the alligators eating the passengers and crew of the passenger local. Only those in the last 2 coaches survived, but the track crew wished they could've saved more from the water.

Jolene Smith got word of the accident and immediately sent help right away. She too went down with the National Guard and a MOW crew to clean up the mess. When she got to the scene, all the canine could see was nothing but a horrible sight. Ripped clothing and dead bodies lying in the water, Pullman cars derailed and smashed together, and the jinxed engine laying in the water, never to turn a wheel again. Finally having enough with the 2-8-0, she ordered the wreck crew to finally get rid of the engine once and for all. Scrapping it. #13 was probably the first steam engine to be scrapped on the FL&HPRR, with the coaches also being scrapped due to the damage they received. The bridge was replaced with a much stronger steel trestle that is still in use today, with a little memorial placed near the bridge to honor those who lost their lives and lessons learned.

But that wasn't the end of #13. On the anniversary of her fatal accident, people would often hear a ghostly whistle blowing through the night before seeing a ghostly 2-8-0 hauling 6 passenger cars full of ghostly passengers traveling through the swamps towards the bridge. The train would cross halfway across before disappearing into thin air with the sound of a loud crash, a loud splash and sometimes screams of terror from the ghostly passengers inside the coaches. The area has been quite popular with the locals, especially on the anniversary of the engine's last run. Jolene sometimes goes to the sight on the anniversary, praying for those who lost their lives may rest in peace.

The Demon 311, maybe, has seen that accident before.
Before she met her fate in 1957.
Perhaps #13's fate was in, maybe a year after her fate?

Why did she come down with the National Gaurd?

To try and rescue some of the passengers in the water, if there were any.

Oh, I thought it was to shoot and scare off the alligators.

They might have done that to try and rescue survivors.

The Evergreen Valley Railroad? Whenever I find the right time. But I haven't abandoned it.

Well I might give it a read, but I'm so interested in the pics and history of the railroad, especially since I might incorporate some ideas for my fictional railroad the Evergreen Glades Railroad which will be partly based off of the Indian Valley's roster, my own and some of my friends.
