Amazing capture, Rock! It's something I've never seen a hawk do before, but I guess they have the same needs as other birds. I saw a hawk with its prey (a hapless pigeon) by the side of a very busy highway near where we live. I almost choked, it was so close by! I guess they are moving into the suburbs, where there are more things to eat!

I fear for them when I see them so close to the highway, but now they must include road kill in their diet because their habitat is getting too small.

There's one hawk that I see over our skies frequently. All the birds seem to know him, and when he's up there, they all either hide, or hound him out of the neighborhood! I've seen bands of little birds (different species) chasing after hawks a number of times--and succeeding in ridding the place of them. There's strength in numbers.
Still, I'm so glad we have a resident hawk to keep things in balance. The food is plentiful here...lots of live prey, such as birds, rodents, etc., to choose from. I suspect that the pigeon the hawk was feasting on was caught live from a nearby area where pigeons congregate en masse. Good for the hawk in that case!
