Description Oh Alice, dear, where have you been?
So near, so far,
so inbetween.

Oil paint again!
I've been attending an oil painting class the last couple of weeks. This is one of my results.

I think I'm finally getting the hang of this paint, far less streaks and bumps than in my earlier pics. But all the waiting until the individuals layers dry ... *sigh* ...

Oil paint on 30x40cm canvas paper.

Oh, and it is inspired by Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland". (Duh! )

I'm actually not sure what it was supposed to be in the movie. But the contrasting skies just blew me away and deserved a little hommage

Wow, this is fantastic! I think the warm colours came out reeeally nicely. The cooler, dark colours are alright but... I'm not sure, they're just not as pretty. And it looks like you probably struggled with the Mad Hatter. But overall it looks really great. I barely know anything about oil painting so this is like WOAH AWESOME, a media other than digital, haha. Anyway. good job.

Oh I struggled a lot with him. I had to rush the pic a little, cause in class you only have two hours at a time. So I was constantly trying to add detail on wet paint with a brush that was actually to big *arg*

Unfortunately it didn't scan well (another plus for digital media ). I had to choose if I wanted to emphasize the yellows or blues ... and I like the yellow side better, too ^^

Yikes Then it kinda looks like you did well, under the circumstances. And ahh, even more problems with traditional media But it's always great having those skills and refining them. It must look awesome in person, at least. ^^

I like it much better in person, yes. But let's be honest, I chose to work traditionally so I'll have to deal with the downsides. (Smaller brushes are on their way )

Good point! There are pros to every media type, and cons to how you want to display each of them. Well, I look forward to seeing more from you. :3

Excellent contrast between the dark blue and the light yellow. It has a trippy effect. From a glance, it appears to be a in a campfire setting. Then you look closer, you could be in a dark cave looking out at the heavily sunshined forest. This reminds me of Brer Rabbit.

Thanks a lot. The sky was difficult to me and I'm very glad my instructor gave me so much advice on how to make the transition between the colors.
And I just googled Brer Rabbit, but I guess I don't get the connection

The reason it reminds me of Brer Rabbit is pretty arbitrary. Obviously, there is a rabbit in the picture, but the trees also resemble a briar patch. If you have ever been to Disneyland and went onto Splash Mountain, you would see the connection a bit more clearly.

never worked with oils before, but i HAVE heard that the drying is a pain. Well, your patience has paid off because this is marvelous. The shading, of the white rabbit especially is very nicely done, and I like that you painted the scenery from your head or some other source; it makes it feel more realistic that seeing the same setting over and over again!. Good job!

I even thinned the paint with a resin mixture that speeds up drying, but every layer took more or less a week before I could go on.

Well I did reference some screenshots to get the overall feel right. But I like it when the setting of the picture serves my intentions, so I changed a lot. And of course because I get bored myself when I see the same screenshot repainted over and over. If people spent the same effort on Bargue plates there would be a lot more pros out there
