Description 'Silence is Not Consent'

Series of work from 2012, portraying the victim blaming in United Kingdom of rape and sexual assault survivors. The Silenced is a series of self portraits which I created to help myself heal from my ordeal at 13 - 14 years old. Its aim is to expose the confused and sometimes misunderstood voice of the survivors whom are desperately trying to be heard.

Your work is outstanding! I don't understand how and why people still blame the 'victims' (I don't like this word in this context, survivor is more appropriate) for these crimes. It's true that there are so many wrong and horrible misconceptions in society about rape and sexual assault, leading to, as you say, survivors being misunderstood and perpetrators being protected. Makes me so angry !!! I think you are an amazing person to create and share your pieces that help you heal and by this, helping others and helping to shatter this false attitude of victim blaming. I hope your family and friends support you, I hope you are doing well and I wish you all the best!

It's so nice to have someone completely and fully understand this society and rape culture, and also what my work is about. My friends are incredibly supportive and drive me to create edgier/more shocking work, all the time I get honest feedback. My family are not so supportive, but with this sort of shock reality, it's to be expected really.

I understand what your work is about, and as I said, I think it's really great! As I told you (I think), I have a close friend who has been raped and I read quite a lot about the subject to understand her better and to support her as best as I can. So it's a very special subject to me and your messages are clear and striking.
I am happy to hear about your friends being so supportive! As for your family, I think you are right. Often, they'll try to keep up the image of the 'perfect', intact family. From my perspective, you are an incredibly strong person. You are facing this, fighting it and I know it's a difficult fight. Hm, I hope it does not sound weird, since I don't know you, but I am really proud of you!
No need to thank me, thank YOU for the great work!
