Description This is a concept from "Tiberium". It shows an extremely large military airship docked at a refueling facility. The airship served as sort of the "home base" in the story.

The image is a 3D scene with some minor retouching in Photoshop - mostly to paint in the birds .

I painted all the textures in the scene, including the sky, which included some photographs taken from the roof of our office.

This is really great!

I had a question though! You say you painted the texture on. So does that mean you rendered the image out, say all in grey, and then just paint all the color in on photoshop? Or did you UV map it and render everything out in lightwave?

Hope I can hear back, cause I'd really like to get back into this!

Thanks I used some photos for the sky - but I had to tweak them quite a bit to have that "post apocalyptic" desolate look. Also, the sky was a spherical map, so it was made from all sorts of things patched together !

But the birds don't seem to mind

i dont mind either

yeah i get the need of the spherical map. im working as a texture and modeling artist right now. i gotta try out some shading and maybe do something like this as well. really great stuff!

Thanks again

I was making all the sky textures for this game - and so I tried to get a head start on that while doing the designs - kind of "double duty".

Skies are fun - but a lot of work. But I think the sky is the most important texture in a level - it fills half the screen the whole time, and sets the lighting and mood. So I put in a lot of work on those. I might actually post some of them - the textures. The're kind of cool, even though they look weird with the spherical distortion !

A lot of the concept images I've posted here probably are render tests

I actually love making skies - and I put all my 3D scenes inside sky domes. With global illumination, the sky is often the main light source for all the ambient lighting

Airship PC base - cool idea. Those monumental docking towers training off in the distance look neat. High tech, but at the same time desolate. The flock of birds is a great touch to suggest the lofty heights.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

steve-burg In reply to keshon83 [2010-09-02 22:18:27 +0000 UTC]

What you see was made entirely with Lightwave 3D, except for painted textures and details.

I can't believe Lightwave can do such a amazing render! Was it 9 version right? And have you tried Modo? If yes do you like it? ^_^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

steve-burg In reply to keshon83 [2010-09-02 22:29:18 +0000 UTC]

Lightwave has always had a great render. Most of these images were done with version 7 (remember it's 3-4 years ago these images were created).

I also have Modo, and it is very good. I just don't know it as well. Modo was developed by the same people as Lightwave, so it is very similar - I felt right at home.

I also know Maya quite well, but I would never use it for doing finished artwork.

Why not btw? Is it mental ray or smth? I'm using Softimage with a huuuge lack in experience and I know it's a 90% similar to maya. And the Lightwave was my very first experience which I left and wounder if I did right Sorry for garbaging your comments desk

steve-burg In reply to keshon83 [2010-09-02 22:50:54 +0000 UTC]

I think a lot of software can get you the result - but I keep gong back to LW because I get what I need so much faster. I've never really been that impressed by Mental Ray - although people do get some nice results. I just don't want to spend that much time fine tuning things. In LW, I pretty much set up the lights and press "go" ! That's what you're seeing here - most of these images are not repainted very much

This was an image I saw some time ago and I was surprised by the extensive use of 3D in your work. until then, I thought, that your work was based on speedpaint, and scenes painted in Photoshop with volumes mixed with some 3d.
You've made, it quite clear, long ago, it is not so.
You have a large domain, either one or the other.

Great image.

Most of my 3D stuff is generated in Lightwave. It's the program I learned to use first, so for me it's very fast to get the result I want.

Gryphon-999 In reply to steve-burg [2010-09-02 07:03:17 +0000 UTC]

Okay. Haven't worked with Lightwave yet. Worked with 3ds max and maya and lately blender. must say Once I got used to the way blender works, it's actually a nice program. (My art is currently only a hobby.) Hope to get better at it though) Love your work. (I'm a huge fan of the whole Tiberium saga)Still need to get the latest one though. need to upgrade my laptop first.
Cheers and keep up the good work.

I think with 3D, it's more what you do with the software (as in it's the artist, pretty much). You can get a decent result from a wide range of programs - it's finding the one you're comfortable with, where it's not a huge struggle - that's the trick
