Description A sturdy looking spaceship hangs in its support cradle, waiting for final clearance to launch.

This is a not-quite-speed-painting (about 3 hours or so, I think) done on a Sunday afternoon a few years ago now. The image was created entirely in Photoshop, and for stuff like this I usually don't use reference.

The ship is asymmetrical in its design. I like asymmetry, and trying to make an asymmetrical design feel balanced is a fun exercise

yes i guess it's alittle tight for a speed paint, but then maybe not

It's kind of in between speed paint and fully rendered - I'm not sure what that would be called ! Probably it took a few hours or so...

Sweeet. Very menacing - reminds me of some of Homeworld/2's better ship designs.

No problem, it's true after all
For a moment there I was worried you wouldn't know what Homeworld was

I remember Homeworld quite well, and I've admired their concept art too!

Despite the technology limitations imposed on it by being made a decade ago, for my money Homeworld remains the finest looking space game to date.

I prefer the second one for gameplay and graphics :/
But I cannot deny that the original had better ship designs.

HW 2 took the graphics up a notch. I admired the storytelling approach of HW - very effective, and especially for an RTS game. I don't usually go for RTS so much, but HW really sucked me in

It's definitely a great story. I'm really bad at RTS games; I still haven't finished the first one!

It's a good game - that's what counts. I'd rather replay something I really enjoy than play something new that doesn't click

Indeed, I hope they make a third one at some point.

steve-burg In reply to Militant-Jester [2010-09-13 06:03:52 +0000 UTC]

That would be great - as long as they aren't tempted to "fix" things. I would hope they would maintain the original aesthetic, and add a lot of subtle enhancements and detail - but that's not always how it goes with such things

Militant-Jester In reply to steve-burg [2010-09-13 06:08:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeaah... there were some rumors that it will be coming out.. more than anything I would be worried about them removing the vertical movement, that would completely ruin it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

steve-burg In reply to Militant-Jester [2010-09-13 17:23:55 +0000 UTC]

I agree. The movement in 3D space was one of the great accomplishments of the game!

I'm happy to be proved wrong, but I am quite skeptical of franchise "reboots" - especially if the original creators play no part in it

Well Relic has reclaimed the copyright from Vivendi, so if there is another Homeworld game, they WILL be the ones to make it - and they havwe several secret projects in the works...

I kind of went about it all backwards. I always drew and painted traditionally, and to me the computer's main appeal lay in doing 3D. So I came late to the party when it comes to digital painting

This may be loose, but I totally love the design details here. It's got a definite vibe of sexy, aerodynamic functionality goin' on. And the yellow flashes really add something... like good make up on a photo model And the asymmetry is interesting. Yeah, I mean "interesting GOOD" It kinda threw me on first look - maybe because it's ALMOST symmetric so my eye was trying to understand why it was being thrown. But when I accept its asymmetry and dig in, it really clicks.

steve-burg In reply to RobCaswell [2010-09-10 15:17:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The color was kind of inspired by the "Y-Wing" (a favorite classic).

Usually I interpret "interesting" as being a good thing - as opposed to "boring". But thanks for elaborating (although I understood your meaning). Nothing's as vaguely unsettling as a comment like: "Hmmm. Interesting. Hmmm..." !

Amazing, cool, great, beautiful, powerful, beautiful, innovative, streamlined, modern, conceptual, harmonious, slim, daring, perfect .... could go on for a long time but not finish the definition. It is very good design .. I love it !!!!!! And I knew from before ... but no matter.
