Description An image I put together from my growing stockpile of 3D space assets.

Safe distance? Let's hope so! The title refers to the supernova in the upper left of frame. If you're anywhere within 100 light years of one of these events, you're in deep trouble!

Supernovae are one possible explanation of the Fermi Paradox [link] because they would tend to purge all life from very large regions of space.

Fortunately, our solar system in a relatively quiet neighborhood and such an event appears unlikely... at the present time

Of course, there's always IK Pegasi to consider... [link]

Stunning - I love the scale of your images!

Nice beautifully done.
Supernovas are indeed deadly, but GRBs would rock the spectrum.

For Gamma Ray Bursts if you are anywhere within 5000 Light Years you are in deep trouble, at 100 light years a GRB would be the equiv of a 1-10 Megaton nuclear warhead being detonated in every sq mile of a planet/moon that is facing the GRB.

Looks like I need to read up on supernovae. I always assumed the danger was a shockwave, but then presumably we'd see the explosion long before we felt any physical effects, so I guess the trouble is massive doses of radiation?

Btw, the clouds on the planet look great. Very naturalistic considering they're made using procedural textures. I'll have to try that trick with the displacement maps (it sounded like you were talking about displacements above, anyway).

I just looked through a small part of your gallery Steve, I like your space-art (Asimov fan since young years...)
This one has a lovely feeling of emptiness...

Thanks! I am a lifelong fan of written science fiction. I just re-read Asimov's "Foundation" books a few months ago

For me, it had been longer. I read 5 of Asimov's books (the original 3, plus the 2 he wrote years later). I enjoyed reading them again, and I like Asimov's no-nonsense style.

I tried a moon environment like this but didn't come up something realistic like that. When I look a that work of yours I can easily point what were my mistakes are actually - so it's like a free training also

I think the key thing is lighting. I greatly admire "2001", and all the space scenes had this amazing feeling due to the lighting. It has this tremendous mood - I especially like the sequence where the astronauts journey across the moon's surface, and that was directly inspirational for this image

Like a vicious hurricane it looks almost elegant when viewed from immense distance. The universe's capacity to make the macro look micro and back again never ceases to astound me. Gorgeous job sir.

Thanks very much. I agree The violent forces of nature and the cosmos are incredibly elegant when seen from a respectful distance. All the infinite chaos on the micro level takes on an amazing sense of balance and order when seen from afar.

Thank you! My hope is to capture the qualities I see in the photos of space - the reality. To my mind, reality is a greater source of inspiration than other artwork - not just in space, but with a lot of subjects!

The scale of something like one of these gas giants is difficult to wrap ones' brain around. I even struggle with appreciating the true size of the Grand Canyon, when standing there looking at it for real. Humans are tiny, in the scheme of things

It's certainly true!
The star Eta Carinae (for example)is highly unstable, and it's already had some "warmup" detonations that probably wiped out any neighboring systems - but it sure looks beautiful in the Hubble pictures!
