Description Another space collage using similar elements as the piece "Passing the Giant" [link]

This ship was incredibly difficult to light - that's mainly what I remember. This was way back in 2009

The details as to technique and resources are identical to the companion piece mentioned above...

I'm not familiar with the show (and after i read all your comments maybe it should stay that way ) but the model is quite interesting, I wonder how it would look if the designers had gotten away from their "gravity is down" rule

Somewhat off topic, but have you read Dan Simmons' Hyperion books? same universe as Orphans of the Helix (if i remember correctly Orphans picks up the story of some minor characters after the series is over) They are excellent books! Very loooong series (4 long books), but i highly recommend it if you haven't read them. In fact I've been kicking around plans to do an image of T'ien Shan with the asian inspired buildings perched on mountaintops above the clouds

I actually want to give it a go - designing a generation ship that is at least somewhat functionally designed.

I've read "Hyperion" and "The Fall of Hyperion" - not the other two. Some of the best science fiction writing in decades, I would say. Hyperion has had an influence on a lot of things, not the least of which are Babylon 5, Halo, and (in an obscure way) The Matrix. Although none of them are anywhere near as good.

Dan Simmons is an amazing writer. Have you read Illium/Olympus? (I haven't - but it's on my list)

I sure wish more people read books! The fixation on "media sci-fi" is out of all proportion. What remakes of old TV shows are coming out in summer of 2011? Why do people care? It's so much a better experience reading a great book

I absolutely agree - more people need to read books, instead of these half baked remakes that Hollywood keeps making. There are so many good authors and books that get passed by in favor of some junk with lots of explosions and big names

Generation ships are fascinating to me, ever since i read the Rama books when i was a kid....but don't let me get carried away

If you have time, you should finish the Hyperion Cantos, the ending is quite good! T'ien Shan is one of the planets Raul stays on near the end, a bit of a Zen Buddhist world perched on towering mountains above a toxic ocean of clouds.

I haven't read Illium/Olympus but I'd like to, i just have so many books to read still

Well, that's the real equation, isn't it? There isn't enough time to read all the incredible books. It's years between really good movies - MANY years.

Oh well - I guess WWF wrestling draws a crowd too. Similar level of quality.

I think sometimes I would like to just lock myself into the scifi section of the library

This feels more like a series camera position - albeit with a cooler backdrop

The ship design does not afford a lot of angles that really work, I discovered. It suffers greatly from the "outer space is a 2D table-top" that presumes gravity is pointing "down". This conception is still the "iron law of media spaceships".

I'm actually intrigued by the challenge of designing a more functional "generation starship". The main thing is, I am certain it would spin to maintain gravity inside. Probably it would be a cylindrical configuration, though I like the idea f having it be broken up into modules like the domes.

Dan Simmons proposed a very interesting ship concept in his story "Orphans of the Helix" (which started out as a pitch for a "Star Trek Voyager" episode). "Cast not your pearls before swine" - fortunately he rescued the story from those dorks and came up with a winner. The Helix was a very kinetic design and I kind of wanted to model it after reading the description

Why didn't you model it?

I still plan on reading that story. It's collection is sitting near the top of my Amazon Wish List.

I didn't model it due to the "Time Crisis"

Its great to be able to connect to an art piece internally. The gas giant is defiantly a mood breaker and the earth like planet makes me feel not so far. The composition is also great thou im not sure about the initial concept of the space station but does it have no exterior light?
I understand that it is "technically" not required how ever it would give some life to the station.

The big space structure was based on a design from an old TV show [link] I agree it needs lights, and a lot of finer scale details as well - so far it is more or less a straightforward copy of what they did. (It was a terrible show, BTW!)

I actually am thinking of trying a completely new take on the same idea, because I like the challenge of showing such an immense "world sized" spaceship
