The image you've created has a very design-like aspect to it, which adds much to the image's impact; however, I believe the image could be pushed further if a greater sensitivity was paid to contrast and shadow. Your interpretation of the form is strong, but if you were to do more thumbnails beforehand to learn how a cartoon would be interpreted in this way. I believe if you look into some sketches from Pixar artists and see how they interpret these rounder forms it would help you to transfer the technique to portraits of animated characters.
