Description "There is a harmony in autumn,
and a luster in its sky,
which through the summer is not heard or seen,
as if it could not be, as if it had not been!" - Percy Bysshe Shelley

This is so beautiful; it kind of makes me yearn for the fall that happens back at home, with gorgeous sunny weather and colorful leaves. Unfortunately, it always rains where I am now, so I haven't been able to fully enjoy the changing of the leaves this autumn. Instead, I'll look at this beautiful photo to remind me of how autumn should look like.

Thanks for the Take care

Excellent colour. I like the focal point on this, with the tree behind it out of focus. The shadow on the long stem is cool. Nice touch dog.

Thanks! Yeah, I was walking underneath some trees around our place with my camera trying all kinds of weird angles and this one seemed to work. I appreciate the comment and .

Oh hey, how do you like your new camera (the Nikon) ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Thorvold In reply to Stewdog [2006-10-29 15:48:34 +0000 UTC]

The new camera is cool. It feels a lot better in my hand then the Canon did. I need to learn more about ISO, Shutter Speeds, and all the other goodies. I also need to get some other lenses. Currently I only have the stock lense that came with it, a AF-S NIKKOR 18-55 mm. I hope to take a class next semester. Till then I'll just keep trying things out, draging my camera with me every where I go.

Stewdog In reply to Thorvold [2006-10-29 17:44:41 +0000 UTC]

I would buy a Nikon in a heartbeat, they are great cameras. I'm glad your camera situation got resolved. Thats so strange that all those Canon Rebel XTi's from that store were glitching. My friend just purchased a Rebel XT and hasn't reported any problems. Its almost like that store just got a bad run of cameras from the factory or something.

Everyone has different opinions about photography, but here are some things I have figured out so far:

ISO speeds: I rarely ever go over ISO 400, and if possible I have it on ISO 100 all the time. The lower the ISO the higher the quality of picture. But low ISO's are really touchy to low light so you either need normal daylight or use a tripod in the evening hours.

Shutter speeds: I haven't explored them too much. I know you need high shutter speeds for action/sports shots. I have messed with slow shutter speeds keeping them open for 10 sec -30 seconds for night shots where I was streaking light across the frame. Sometimes (when using a tripod) you can also use longer shutter speeds to soak in all the colors and subtle nuances of a scene. Overall though, I just let the camera choose the shutter speed for me.

Lens: I have a 75mm to 300 mm lens and I love it! It will totally change the way you take pictures.

Like you said just keep dragging your camera around everywhere because you never know when a great picture is going to pop up. I think you are really going to enjoy growing as a photographer, it changes the way you see the world around you. Sounds cliche but its true.

Thorvold In reply to Stewdog [2006-10-29 18:55:52 +0000 UTC]

What type of scene's or things do you use the 75mm - 300mm lense for? Is that a telephoto lense?

I need a lense for wide angle and a telephoto lense.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Stewdog In reply to Thorvold [2006-10-29 19:10:36 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, its a telephoto lens. When I first got it I was thinking I would use for really far away shots. Like seeing an eagle perched far away somewhere in a tree. But to my surprize Aimee and I use it more for close up shots of flowers, insects, etc. Actually, if you go look through her gallery she as some dragonfly and bee shots she did with the 300mm lens. It also works really well for portrait shots of people.

You might think why can't I just use the 18 -55 mm for all those types of shots (which you can!) but the 300mm just adds a whole different feel that I can't explain unless you try it and see for yourself. This shot here [link] I used the 300mm and I never would of captured this with my 55mm (even if I was standing up close). I hope that makes sense, its kind of hard to explain.
