Like all stories...let's start from the beginning. Cadence wasn't exactly hated by her mother, even if she was a bit of a surprise to her. Her mother didn't want a child because she did not know how attentive she could be to the child, and that reality translated into their relationship. Opal Essence was constantly busy with her growing company and diplomatic position which made it hard for them to interact on a more personal level. Those times were sweet, but never lasted long enough.

That's where Rhyolite came in! He was a splendid stay at home dad! Cadence and him always did all kinds of fun things together, whether it was selling dreamcatchers from his dying shop, or actually going out on a first-class train ride to sightsee. Whatever money Opal earned he made sure to spend on Cadence and spoil her rotten, but he obviously rewarded himself as well for his incredible parenting with drinks after the day was finished. As far as his wife was concerned, she came home to an empty bank account, a drunk husband, and a daughter, who she didn't even know, who was getting treated like a princess when the funds were for other things. The child was not even capable of full sentences at this point! What the hell was Rhyolite thinking?!

As Cadence grew into actually being able to form full sentences, she began to notice the tension between her parents. This tension would especially rise when Cadence was having trouble learning magic, so Opal had to stay home to teach her for extended periods of time. This actually helped them grow closer, and Opal realized how much she had been missing in her kid's early years... Cadence was considerate and kind, and often gave things that her father gave her to others who wanted it more. She did her best to cheer her mother up constantly, when it should be the other way around. She appreciated it greatly, and finally began to feel that maternal love sprout and grow in her chest.

Rhyolite, however, was incredibly jealous and embarrassed by this turn of events. His magic was only good for detecting crystals and a dull glow, like most Frostbitten. It was an ability that they were just born with, and didn't have to be learned, unlike unicorn magic which had to be constantly practiced and exercised like a muscle so it could get stronger and stay in shape. Opal was stealing this precious bonding experience from him, him who was going to be the ace parent, the one that Cadence would turn to no matter what... It was fine, sure, Opal could hang out with Cadence whenever she wanted, but this was completely not part of their parenting plan. He could teach her magic, or maybe get someone else to do it, Opal could get back to work far away from him where she couldn't show off how much better she was than him... The last thing he needed was for Cadence to realize that truth as well.

Because of this, the tension grew over a few more years. It was clear that Opal was more forward about wanting to be a part of Cadence's life now, and Rhyolite was not having it. This tug of war between their child strained the parents' relationship and escalated into daily arguments (which always sent Rhyolite into cowering or drinking). Cadence did her best to cheer them both up, but she could never cheer them both up at the same time despite her wishes. And despite said wishes, the inevitable demise of her parents' relationship came when Opal declared that a divorce would be in order.

Rhyolite was not going to have this. Cadence didn't like the idea very much either--As a child, she saw no good happening if her parents left each other. Everything could be fixed...right? Her father believed the same thing. So, like all insecure alcoholic stallions do, he staged a murder-suicide note and convinced Cadence that Opal didn't love her and was going to take her away from him forever and that they had to escape and live by themselves somewhere far away where they'd never see her again. Impressionable Cadence had a bad feeling, but...her mom WAS the one who proposed the divorce in the first place, no loving mother would do that...

So she went with him. Opal came home to the note and realized for the first time the weight of what she had lost now that her daughter was gone away somewhere. She was not convinced for a second that Rhyolite had the guts to murder, much less kill himself. She wanted him found and arrested and their daughter returned at all costs. Unfortunately...she would never see her again.
