Rhyolite and Cadence lived on the streets, constantly inn-hopping and trying to save their money. But as long as he had the wallet, it was inevitable that he would waste bits on alcohol from time to time. But Cadence would always find the joy in everything they did, and constantly made sure to cheer up her father per usual. Despite it all, she was his sunshine...a sunshine he refused to share with anyone else. But alas, she at least had to go to school. In the meantime, he would make dreamcatchers in their new shoddy apartment and sell them together after school. It was an easy life, even if they had to move every couple of months because of the search. But since this was back in the day, news didn't get very far, and they were basically free to go after the heat died down.

Cadence noticed that even for business purposes, Rhyolite seemed to be getting more and more anxious about talking to other ponies. He could never look them in the eyes anymore, or stand up for himself. It upset her greatly, especially when the kids at school would make fun of him at times because he was so shy. The contrast between him and her were so different that ponies even doubted they were related. So she decided she would try and make people like him no matter what it took.

She would go around to the alley cats and feed them all despite everyone's wishes, for she believed that all living creatures deserved an equal chance at life. She got the idea to try and get them to like her...with magic. Since even when they came to her for food, if she tried to pet them or anything else, they would hiss and try to attack. Thus... every day she practiced. Using her horn she tried to propel some kind of magic to them. Although in all honesty, she didn't know of any spellbooks that would be in a dump like this or have any understanding of any kind of magic that would be of use to her for this situation.

She struggled for a long time, especially considering her claim to fame was the ability to make little crystals at will. But after many stressful months, she finally was able to go up to the biggest, most antisocial alley cat and use a spell that made it purr, rub against her, introduce her to its family, and even follow her home. Rhyolite allowed her to keep it, since it seemed to like her so much. Within the next day, however, the spell wore off and she got scratched up real bad. But now that she knew the spell worked, she had some plans for it.

One day, Cadence had to go to the hospital where the nurse was refusing to treat her because Rhyolite came off as suspicious, perhaps even the perpetrator of her injuries. (It had been the alley cats after the spell wore off.) So Cadence put her newfound power to use...and they got a room for free and were hastily treated. She had done it... ponies would finally like her father and appreciate all the hard work he went through just to get them going to the next day. She used this new power again and again, and it began to become more powerful and more long lasting the more she practiced. She had to promise herself only to use this power to discreetly help others, not to entertain herself.

This kept up for years.

Rhyolite was so delighted and happy about everyone finally appreciating him, his work, and his dreamcatchers that he decided he and Cadence could move back to his hometown in the cold north predominantly run by Frostbitten. He thought maybe he could introduce her to the culture that neglected him. He feared being scorned once more like many years ago...but he wasn't--not with Cadence by his side. They loved and adored her, but they (quite uncharacteristically) adored him even more. The whole time, he had no idea that it was his daughter's doing. For all she knew, she was doing a good thing. But all good things must come to an end.

Mr. Hisster is obviously mates with Mrs. Hisses, and their kitten is Iris. The other two cats are Mr. Hisster's siblings! they were all the ones beat the shit out of Cadence lol
