Description "Mitch, buddy! How the hell are you?" called Katharine from down the hall. Katharine was a teenage bombshell. She was one of those girls where everything seemd to stop for her. Every guy adored her and wanted to be with her, but she has been dating the best looking guy in her class for nearly five years. The only thing out of place in her perfect seeming life was her best friend, Mitch. Nobody seemed to like Mitch except for Katharine. He was a little bit of a geek, but he always seemed to be alone by choice. Katharine was the only person he would ever speak to.

"What?" asked Mitch in a confused state. "Oh...hi Katharine." he said quietly. She threw her arms around him to give him a great big hug and laughed. Mitch and Katharine have been best friends ever since they met in grade school long ago. They always hung out with each other, but they were never intimate. They could talk to each other about anything like any best friend would, but there was never any chemistry between them on the surface. Katharine saw Mitch as a good looking guy, and the best friend a girl could ask for. Mitch saw Katharine as an angel. He loved her and was in love with this perfect being, but he would never dare to express his feelings for fear that they might ruin what great of a relationship they have had all their lives.

"Come on now, Mitch," she spoke into his ear while her arms were still around him. "You don't have to use my full name. We've known each other for many years."

"I know," Mitch started. "But I've called you Katharine all my life, and it would just be really weird to call you something different." He tried to force a smile to her, but he noticed somethng odd. Under her left eye he saw that there was a faint dark purple color that makeup could not completly cover. "Katherine..." he stammered. "What happened here?"

Katherine squeezed him tighter to try to stall for a good excuse. "I...I uh..." she treid to say. Mitch knew that she couldn't think up a good response for a coverup because he would see right through it anyways. He knew exactly what was happening to her. She sighed and rested her head on his shoulder.

"He's been doing it for about a month now." she whispered quietly. "I don't know why I didn't tell you...I guess I thought I could hide it." She was talking about her boyfriend Freddy. Freddy and Katharine had been dating for such a long time that it was hard for anyone to imagine them not being together. They were always sexual together, and they always talked about marraige in a half-serious, half-joking manner. It would always pain Mitch to see them together. Suddenly Freddy was seen walking down the hall right for them.

Freddy was a big guy. He was all muscle and no brains. He was an asshole to everyone because he thought that he was top dog. He was the kind of guy who always shoved people out of his way and threw things at the lower class students. He seemed to leave Mitch alone for the most part because of Katharine. As he approached the two they noticed that there was a sway in his step, and he blinked very slowly that was accompanied by a dumb looking smile. He had been drinking.

Mitch made a disapproving sound before whispering back into Katharine's ear. "Drunk in school on a Monday. It's not even ten o'clock yet. What a douche bag."

"Quiet, Mitch." Katherine said quickly. "He's an angry drunk. That's how I got my eye to be like this."

Freddy stopped when he got near them, and he looked over the situation slowly while breathing heavily. "How appropriate." he slurred. "It's Mitch and bitch." He laughed to himself, and Mitch glared at him as Katharine removed her arms from around Mitch. She walked over to Freddy slowly and nervously put an arm around his waist. He lifted an arm to put it around her, and she winced in fear as he did so. Mitch felt a pain in his heart for Katharine. She tried to pull Freddy away, but he stood firm as he stared at Mitch.

Freddy took a few steps forward with Katharine still at his side. He took his free hand and grabbed Mitch by the shirt. He pushed him up against the lockers and held him there while breathing alcoholic fumes into Mitch's face. "You touch my girl again," Freddy said slowly and angrily. "I'll fucking kill you..." Katharine pulled even harder and Freddy to leave, and eventually he let Mitch go. He turned away, but not before moving his hand lower on Katharine's back as they walked off.

Mitch swore under his breath although everyone around him could hear. He clenched his fists and turned around to face the lockers. He swung once and hit the locker hard. The jarring banging sound it made echoed down the halls. He swung a second time, and his fist left a little bit of blood on the dent he just formed in the locker. The look in Katharine's eyes told Mitch that she was to suffer even more beatings tonight. He could not let this happen. Her fear made a rage boil in him that would not stop.

The rest of the day was hard on Mitch. he could not concentrate on any of his classes or work. The teachers really didn't care, but they noticed. They beleived that it was some sort of rebellious act against them, so they only made his rage worse. He never covered up his bloody hand, and it bled through every class. The assignments that he managed to turn in had red smears all over them. By the end of the day the bleeding had stopped on it's own, but it still covered Mitch's hand and wrist. He had only seen Katharine once during the rest of the day, and she looked even more scared than she had before. It was almost as if she wanted to ask for help, but she didn't know how. All she said was that she'd call Mitch later.

Mitch drove home quickly after school and paced around his house. Nobody was home besides him. He had seen Katharine and Freddy after school by Freddy's car. He was drinking from a clear bottle, and Katharine had her arms crossed in front of her. Mitch saw that Katharine said something, and Freddy basically shoved her into his car and drove off quickly. He saw her struggling as they passed him by. Now at home he walked quickly trying to think of what to do. He knew he had to help her, but that only meant one thing. He would have to do it by force.

Mitch got back into his car and drove off quickly again. He knew where Freddy lived, and he knew that's where he had taken his love. Mitch blew off stop signs and went through red lights quickly. He was lucky that no police officers were around to see him, or his plan would have been ruined. Mitch saw Freddy's house in the distance, so he parked his car a block away. He got out and started sneaking through yards. He didn't want to be seen at all, so he would move quietly through backyards all the way up to Freddy's house.

From upstairs in Freddy's house he could hear a scream. It came from Katharine. Mitch did not know if the scream was in pain or fear, but he did not want to take any chances. He bolted for Freddy's back door and turned the knob quickly. Locked. Mitch turned and ran for the front door. He spotted Freddy's car parked crooked in the driveway. The driver's door was only partially closed, and the inside light was on. Mitch crept closer to the front door. He reached out with a shaking hand for the knob and he slowly began to turn it. The door was unlocked. He pushed it open very slowly and quietly before stepping inside.

As Mitch entered the house, he closed the door as quietly as possible behind him. He could hear the voices of the two people above him, and he felt so helpless downstairs. Mitch started his way silently up the staircase nearby. He passed pictures of the person causing his love pain at that moment. At the top of the stairs he heard one of the doors fly open.

Freddy burst out of his room and walked straight across the hall. He walked quickly towards the staircase. he turned the corner and looked down. Nobody was there. Freddy grumbled to himself as he kept going down the hall. He entered another room, then exited quickly. Mithc kept a hand over his mouth as he was hiding in the bathroom. He saw that Freddy was carrying a clear bottle of something in one hand, and in the other he held a long sword. Freddy stomped down the hall back to his room and slammed the door closed.

Mitch snuck quietly from the bathroom and took a deep breath. He moved slowly to Freddy's room where the door was closed. Mitch reched out and grabbed the doorknob. Locked. He swore to himself and looked around quickly. He remembered the sword that Freddy had carried out from the room down the hallway. Mitch turned slowly to face that room.

Mitch pushed the door open to that room. He saw hunting rifles hanging on the walls. There was another sword, and there were bows with quivvers full of arrow as well. Animal heads hung from the walls, and a big bearskin rug looked back up at him. Mitch knew that this was the trophy room. He walked to the wall decorated with weapons, ad his hands immediately went for the rifle. Mitch loaded it up and headed quietly out of the room.

As Mitch entered the hall, he heard the sound of glass breaking from Freddy's room followed by a bloodcurtling scream from Katharine. That made Mitch mov a little bit faster. He reached to open Freddy's door, but it was still locked. Mitch wondered for a moment to figure out how to open the door. While he was thinking, he heard Freddy yell at Katharine then punch the door from the other side. Mitch knew what to do.

He held the gun tightly and faced the door. He kicked the door to make a loud thud, then quickly took aim at the door. He shook a little in anticipation. Freddy swore loudly from the other side of the door. He threw it open quickly, and he came face-to-face with the barrel of the rifle. He had the sword raised in one hand, and he lowered it when he saw that it was Mitch.

"Mitch..." he started slowly while still looking down the barrel of the gun. "What the fuck are you doing here, and what the fuck are you doing with that gun?"

"Mitch?" called out Katharine. "Oh god, Mitch, help me!"

"Shut up you stupid bitch!" yelled Freddy back at her. Mitch cocked the gun loudly and pushed it against Freddy' throat. He started pushing him backwards with the gun into the bedroom. Katharine was tied to the bed with her arms spread and her shirt torn open. She ha da few scracthes on her face from the broken bottle, and she was crying.

"Put it down." Mitch told Freddy simply. He wanted the sword on the floor, but Freddy would not listen.

"Fuck you." Freddy responded. It was final. Freddy never listened to anybody, and he wasn't about to start now. Mitch gripped the rifle tightly and is was still aimed at Freddy. Freddy suddenly rose the blade over his head and stepped forward. He pushed himself at the barrel which knocked Mitch back. He tripped over a pile of clothes, and landed in the hall. Freddy stood over Mitch and swung the sword . Mitch pulled the trigger and the rifle fired.

Through all the confusion Katharine was screamins. She couldn't see what had happened, but she could hear someone breathing heavily. She could see two sets of feet laying motionless at the entrance of the bedroom. She struggled with the ties that bound her down, and one managed to come loose. She untied the other and jumped to her feet quickly. She was afraid to look, but she knew that she had to.

Katharine looked slowly into the hallway. The sword was stuck into the ground and standing straight up. Freddy was face down on one side of the sword, and Mitch lay motionless on the opposite side. The blade was stuck into the ground about three inches away from his head. Mitch had his eyes closed tightly. Katharine thought they were both dead. She put a hand over her mouth to stifle a scream that was about to arise, but then she saw Mitch's chest moving up and down quicky. He was alive.

"Mitch!" Katharine called out to him. "Mitch you're alright!" Mitch opened his eyes slowly and saw Katharine above him. She had thrown herself onto his body, but he never noticed. She was crying into his chest and repeating his name, but he couldn't feel or hear her. He turned his head to see Freddy. His eyes were shut and a pool of blood was forming under his body.

Mitch put his arms around Katharine after looking away from Freddy and stood up with her. They wlaked towards the stairs without looking back. Katharine put her hand in his and clutched his arm tightly.

"Let's get the hell out of here." she said. Mitch nodded. He could not feel Katharine's hand in his. He could not feel her clutching his arm. He couldn't feel anything. He couldn't figure out why he was unable to move. He put his hand to his chest and felt a long piece of sharp steel sticking out. He looked down to see the sword sticking into him. Blood stained the all the way to the tip. He didn't notice, but Katharine was screaming.

Freddy was barely hanging onto the sword as he kept it driven in through Mitch's back and chest. Blood still ran fro his own chest, and it started spilling out the sides of his house. Freddy then fell over, dead. Mitch still stood in suprise while the sword was impaled through his torso. He dropped to his knees with his hand still clasped around the sword. Katharine fell at his side still screaming and crying loudly. He could finally hear her.

"Katharine..." he struggled to say. "I love you...I love you..." He put a bloody hand on her cheek to wipe away a tear, but left a red streak on her face. He then fell onto his side as Katharine watched in terror. He finally closed his eyes and died.
