Description These are one of pair of 2 pairs of spats that I made. They are made of an eggshell-colored muslin, are lined on the inside, have the under-strapping, and took me about 4 hours total for the pair. These are the tall ones (which i call my "boot spats"), I made a shorter pair as well (the ones that are more commonly seen on dapper gents).

Hooray for my beginning works in the art of textiles!!

Cheers!

These are freakin amazing!
I unfortunatley don't have a machine to sew, but I'm planning to make a pair of Canvas 'steampunk' spats of a similar style... Only trouble is finding a leather or pleather material to line the inside, probably from an old jacket or something
I really like these though

Do you have a pattern for these, or anything?

They look great! I'll be making some myself soon for a Gangster-style cosplay. Hopefully they come out as nice as yours...

just wondering, what is the use of spats? Sure, they look classy (and wonderful), but what is the point of them, to keep your boots clean?

Well, they were originally intended for keeping one's shoes clean, but a bit later in their history they became a bit of a status symbol among the wealthier partitions of society, and began to be worn when a gent was going to the opera or a night on the town. During WWI, soldiers used the extended versions of them, though they were generally made from canvas, wool, or leather. The purpose they served to the soldiers of the era had kinda reverted back to their original intent of keeping the soldier's boots clean and the insides dry. Did that help?? heh

Well, I fished around online for a pattern, and made a pair according to the pattern (adjusted to fit my gigantic feet, of course). After that, I decided to make a pair like I've seen on old WWI soldiers. So, I took the base portion of the pattern, and extended it upwards as well as making sure that the top part would be the right measurement to accommodate for my the size of my calf. Then, it was just a matter of cutting, sewing, and answering the question of "wow, where did you buy those??" *beams with pride* lol I'm actually wearing them right now, and just got back from the movie theater with my kiddos. Had 5-6 people ask about them while getting tickets and popcorn. heh

thank you but how much fabric did you use for the outside and inside of the spats. Also, how did you sew on the buttons , and could you lace it through some holes if you could, and lol finally how did you put the elastic on the bottom. Thank you for your replay earlier

I'm not really sure how much material I used, but I'd say a yard would make a pair, with some left over. And the liner would be the same because it's just a mirror of the outer material. As far as the buttons, I just sewed them on by hand. I set up the button hole according to the buttons I was gonna use, and spaced them thusly. I'm not sure how you mean as far as lacing them. You mean like a shoe? The elastic was sewn on the bottom by finding where the best placement would be, marking it, cutting some elastic to fit, and sewing it in place using a zig-zag stitch.

Well, think of it this way, I didn't have anyone to answer any questions I had. I just kinda winged everything as I went along. They could have looked worse. *shrug* Glad I could help.
