Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

Vision:
This piece immediately invites the viewer to dream and imagine--much like what the character sitting by the window seems to be doing. The theme in itself seems quite simple at first, but the various integrated elements cause the eye to wander and to try to discern everything, from the general aspect (the girl, the windows) to the tinier details (the symbols engraved in the rocks). The more you look at it, the more you can find other ways of considering it. Is it about dreaming? Or about watching the world go by from some kind of cell? And if it is a cell, is it an inner one? Who put these symbols there, and what are they used for? And so on.

Originality:
Not the most original piece ever seen, as it can be viewed and interpreted as something quite 'common' in fantasy-themed pictures. However, this is probably debatable, depending on how you actually choose to understand it.

Technique:
The elements seem well integrated as far as cutting and selections are concerned: no hard edges, no awkward integrating, no unneeded blank spaces. The textures blend together, making it look as if all the elements are really part of the same world, of the same frame, and not just pasted together. Your work here is nicely done. The major flaw, in my opinion, is the lightning source--or sources. It seems to come from the window mainly, but in this case, the woman's shadow should be more pronounced and lengthen towards the foreground. The parts where the rocks are lighter kind of conflict with this as well, making it appear as if there is another source of light coming from the background--a source that should then be made more apparent, although it would likely conflict with the body's shadow, then. Also, in some parts of the picture, the symbols on the rocks seem a little 'flat', as if they were placed vertically, and not following the natural angles of the stone. (I didn't notice it at first; it became more apparent after a while.) This is however what I'd consider one of the hard parts of performing good photomanipulations, so it's not like it was something very easy to avoid.

Impact:
It is overall a beautiful composition to look at, and I dare say that its thumbnail itself is already quite eye-catching (I usually don't even look at pictures whose thumbnails don't catch my attention, not to mention actually leaving a critique). The elements you put together are well chosen, and this also contributes to making it stand out.

I thought I already commented on this, sorry it is so late.

You have done an incredible job! I love that you used two of my images that normally are not thought of as compatible, the window and the cave, and manipulated them together so well!

I do agree with ~The-Shadow-Mistress in that antiquing the windowsill frame would have made it look like it was the same age as the hieroglyphs. Also, I think I would have used the same technique on the hieroglyphs as you have your signature under the windowsill to make them stand out a bit more. Like they were etched in. But, that is just my opinion

I think this is one of my favorite uses of my stock to date. I really love this!

Thank you so much, so sorry about this late reply... I'm so glad you love it that much
I did try to make everything look etched in but making them stand out and look right was the hardest part, so yeah they are kind of not standing out for that reason But I liked the idea of having carvings on the rocks, to make it look really old, which also means the window sill should look really old.
Thank you for your great comment

The-Shadow-Mistress [2010-12-26 23:41:05 +0000 UTC]

Critique By The-Shadow-Mistress:

This specific piece of art has composition and texture. The mixture of surrealism and fantasy make it even more real. Even the visionary etchings in the stone create that ancient feeling, as if she had been waiting there an immense duration. Yet, I believe the part I like most about it is has she sits, almost like she was looking a light year away (hence the title of this magnificent piece of artwork). Her hair curls and falls over her shoulders like that is a piece of art in itself. Beyond the room, you see the planet and the stars. You even managed to put a green and blue haze to make it look even more magical.

I can only think of two mishaps that might have happened:
1. The window doesn't really look like it fits in the picture. The frame is too new and bright and doesn't fit the old rock too well. I recommend "antiquing" the wood until it fits better. It still looks great, though.
2. The young woman looks like she is kind of hovering over the windowsill instead of sitting on it. This is portrayed by her arms that are suppose to be helping her balance. She comes off the side a little too far, giving her that strained look. Still, she has that beauty that captures your attention without ruining the picture.

You did an excelent job!
