Episode 3: The Mother of all problems

October 23rd, 4:12 P.M.

Thoughts raced through Tanner's mind. There was more than one Feral upstairs, he had heard them fighting over food. The thrum of the Hunter's propellers was background noise to him now, as was the creaking of the house and the constant rain striking the roof The ember of his cigarette glowed dully, and his Mp5's flashlight provided the rooms sole illumination.

He drummed his fingers on the Mp5's front grip, and slowly got to his feet. He winced as the floorboard beneath him groaned from his shifting weight. The Ferals had stopped moving. He paused, and listened for the Ferals. After several minutes, they resumed....doing whatever the hell they were doing. Tanner crept towards the stairs, the floor creaking with each step. The Ferals didn't seem to notice, and he snuck up the stairs. The door was cracked slightly open. Through the crack in the door he could see a dusty old mirror, and, squinting at the mirror, could make out the reflection of the Ferals in the mirror. There was three of them, all hunched over a dead Imperial sniper, feasting. A wave of nausea swept over him, and he retched, covering his mouth with his hand.

After fighting down his urge to vomit, he looked again. Two males, one about his size, and the other over a foot taller than him, and a pregnant female. Tanner's gut twisted, and he became light headed, thinking at a machine gun rate. "So the Ferals can mate. Does the disease pass from the mother to the child? Is there a way to tame a Feral infant? Is there a cure? Should I just kill her? ....Is it wrong to?"

Tanner realized he was holding his breath, and gripping his Mp5 hard enough to hurt his knuckles. He released his breath, and loosened his grip, shaking his head clear of all thoughts, it was now or never. He readied his aim, lifted his boot, and kicked the door in. The Ferals jumped up in surprise, turned to face him, and snarled. Blood covered their mouths, muzzles, and teeth. The taller male, the alpha male, stepped infront of the female, and barked. The smaller male grabbed a jagged, rusty knife from the top of a drawer, and charged at Smoke. Smoke aimed at him, and pulled the trigger, firing five shots and making five neat holes in the lesser male's chest. he dropped, dead before he hit the ground.

The alpha male howled, and stampeded towards Smoke. Tanner unleashed full auto fire at the towering Feral. It got within arms length of him, and lunged. Tanner sidestepped, drew his knife, and jammed it into the alpha males neck with one fluid movement. The female howled in anguish. So Ferals can feel emotions, too? Tanner aimed at her, as she rushed at him. He hesitated, unsure if he should shoot her. In that moment of hesitation, she tackled him to the ground, and bit his shoulder, tearing at his flesh. Tanner cried out in agony, and kicked her off. She hit the ground and quickly got to onto her hands and feet, snarling, poised to pounce at him.

He got to his feet, picking up his Mp5 by the barrel. She lunged at him, and he swung the gun like a bat, the stock of the smg connecting with her head and knocking her to the floor, hard. He knelt down next to her and checked her pulse. She was still breathing, and her pulse was steady, she was just knocked out. He laid a hand on her belly, and felt the baby kick. The baby was alright, and she would be out for a while, giving him enough time to get away. He winced, grit his teeth, and placed his hand on his wound, feeling his blood oozing out. He pulled the first aid kit off of his belt, sat down, and began to treat the bite, praying that the disease wasn't passed through biting.
