Here's a photo of the Usagi school uniform costume that I debuted at Anime North. I didn't make the costume and I'm not going to name the seller that I bought the costume from because it has been a very negative experience. My costume turned out ok, but a second school uniform costume that I ordered for a friend was not at all as the listing described and I'm still sorting out if the seller will allow a return for a refund of the costume. I had to replace the front bow on my costume as the bow the seller sent me was not the right size. This bow was from my old Hitomi costume and one of the snaps was letting go when I was doing this shoot so I apologize for my bow looking a little droopy. That didn't keep me from smiling! I think I look a little cheesy here, but c'est la vie!I'm planning to make a new blouse for the costume to Cosplay the summer version of the uniform, but that might not happen until later this year or next year. I am quite happy with the skirt. I did alter some shoes for the costume by adding elastics, but I wish I had purchased shoes with a bit of a heel to them. These shoes are flat and a little too tight so they weren't that comfortable. ~_~ I have a pair of black high heels that I could add elastic to and use instead that may in fact be more comfortable.
This costume taught me to be more cautious when buying a commission. I definitely only trust my close friends, but I did have fun Cosplaying Usagi. I love the look of her school uniform and I think when I make a new blouse I'll be a lot happier with the costume.

Gosh that seller @_@ So much hassle! I think your uniform looks great! I'm glad you were able to replace the front bow as well. I really like the detail in the costume that you added such as the shoes and the briefcase. I think your wig looks great and you look so beautiful smiling! The only thing missing is an ice cream cone...Usagi is always filling her face with goodies and candies lol
It's a great costume for simple cosplay gatherings or a lazy day at a con for sure! Looks pretty comfy!

It was pretty comfy except for the shoes being a bit tight. Should have went a size up. >.< I actually debated about asking Mike for ice cream photos since we were like 10 ft from an ice cream truck. I was worried I would make a mess on my costume, but I guess that would kind of be in-character. XD I should have brought some food for the shoot. Maybe next time for a school uniform group. Speaking of which, we should see if we can find a few people and Cosplay the school uniforms of the characters. (^^) I know Pan is on board and it would be awesome if you joined us. If we could get all 5 girls, that would make for a wicked photoshoot. (^_^)b

You may not know me but I stumbled upon your Usagi cosplay (I'm a big fan of Usagi cosplays) and I find it really cute. But upon reading your description, I was really sorry to hear the kinds of things that happened.
Personally, considering what you mentioned, I think both the bow and the shoes look quite cute, in addition to the wig and the rest of the cosplay (always did like her school uniform best) so don't be too hard on yourself. The fact you were so detailed with the shoes is impressive as most cosplays I see skip that. Also, I think the smile looks fine, as does the pose.
I've been wanting to get an Usagi cosplay for a friend of mine but never thought there'd be complications like the ones you mentioned here. Do you have any tips?

Thank you for the compliment! Since I was buying the costume I figured I should focus in on the details to make sure that for my own part, I could make the costume as accurate as possible (like modifying a pair of shoes).
I really like the school uniform designs from Sailor Moon, especially for Usagi's school so I really enjoyed wearing this despite the setbacks.
It's hard for me to think of tips for ordering a costume. You always put a bit of trust into the hands of a commissioner and assume they'll provide you with a high quality costume based on their description of what they make and the photos. In the case of the seller I bought my costume from, they provided totally misleading photos of the costume they were selling. Not for Usagi as much, but for another school uniform costume and that worries me about the quality of the shop overall. There also are some issues with my costume. You can't tell here, but the blouse is rather see-through. Thankfully the red bow covers up most of my chest, but that's only because I replaced the bow. The original bow the seller sent me was less than half the size of the bow that I replaced it with. It totally didn't match the character at all and wasn't what I expected from the seller.
I think the best advice I can give is do your research. Look for Cosplayers that have previously purchased a costume from a seller and see the quality. Also, ask questions about any sort of element of a costume you want to make sure the costume you're ordering will have. Sometimes sellers will provide a really great sample photo, but the actual costume won't be so great. Search for video or blog reviews of a commissioner's shop. Actual customer photos can really show you the quality difference.

Forgive me if I'm confused but is the uniform in this photo the one you bought or the one you made (or a combination of the two)? That's a bummer about the blouse and the bow being so small. But your adjustments really paid off here.
Wow, thanks for all the info! Like I said, I never would've realized there was so much to do in order to purchase a cosplay. And I think it's hard enough just seeing people make them.
Do you happen to know how much a similar cosplay might be? And where's a good place to look? I've only ever thought of ebay to be honest.

The uniform in this photo is the one that I bought aside for the red bow, which I made myself because the bow I was sent with the costume didn't work at all. I'm planning to make a new blouse, but it'll be the summer version with short sleeves.
I really can't say what price the uniform should be. Mine was very overpriced for the quality. I would suggest looking on Cosplay sites like American Cosplay Paradise or Cosplay.com and seeing if anyone purchased their costumes and where they bought them from.

Thank you! I took your suggestion and posted a photo. It's one of my favourites from the shoot that I did. Since Usagi is one of my favourite characters I still was able to find a bright side when wearing the costume.

Sailor Moon isn't a series I follow, but my interest in it has grown a lot recently (funny thing is, part of it was because of something COMPLETELY unrelated ), and I'm planning on checking out the show when I get the chance.

I highly suggest checking out Sailor Moon. Maybe check out the new series, Sailor Moon Crystal, and see if you like it enough to read the Manga or watch the original series. The original series has 200 episodes so it's a bit long to check out, but it's super fun.

I cannot believe how complicated this commission has turned out to be. My Usagi costume was pretty good aside for a couple of issues like the bow, but the second costume looked nothing like the character. ~_~ I just wish the seller would stop fighting me when it's clear the costume is nothing like what they advertised.
