My opinion: the '80s dub of Laputa is no good. Despite being more "accurate", it suffers from some truly terrible acting and even choppier writing. Disney's version, despite being a bit more of a loose interpretation and making the leads teens, is otherwise a miles better dub, with genuinely better performances and smoother writing.

Watching this movie on the "All Night Show" sometime in the 1980s was the first hint that I had that Japanimation could be anything but giant robots and fascist kid gangs beating each other senseless. And after 30 years, Miyazaki remains the only thing in anime that still interests me.

It is, because only Disney can afford names like that for a dub. And despite what purists may say, the Disney dub isn't bad at all. In fact, if you evaluate it as an entertainment value and not as a comparison tool to the Japanese version, it's great fun in its own right. Then again, I HAVE seen both versions and I personally enjoyed the dub pretty much unreservedly, despite some parts of it being somewhat less subtle than the original Japanese.

No problem, and I'm glad to see another person who actually likes Disney's dub just as much as I do. And yes, I agree; James van der Beek may not be perfect as Pazu, but I thought he did a pretty good job. There are a couple of places where he cracks his voice a bit too much, but overall I thought he was grossly underrated.

Another thing that really impresses me about Disney's dub is how they pay close attention to the lip sync so that it doesn't look like a badly dubbed Kung Fu flick. There was at least one scene in the film where a character's mouth is moving in the distance and the timing is off, but it wasn't jarring enough to take me out of the film. My only quibble with the dub is the changing of the last part of Sheeta's speech at the end of the film, where she says "the world cannot live without love". I personally think "surviving apart from Mother Earth" would have been a better choice, as that's more in line with Miyazaki. That said, does it ruin the dub or the film for me? Not at all; the film is still wonderful and the performances are just amazing—especially the supporting cast. Luke practically stole the whole film as the villain, and Dola and her pirates were just perfect as well.

I thought that Musca was voiced by Mark Ha- oh I see what you did lol Yeah he's always very good. And creepy. I heard a little bit of the Joker from the old animated Batman show in Musca's voice. I agree- I think they did a wonderful job. Cloris Leachman was really good too.

Good picture but their noses are weird.
I grew up with this movie since i was a teen in the 90's when i was 15 15 years ago when i had a fansub tape and the soundtrack from one of my city's import stores.
Did this movie reminded you of Avatar at times? Cameron is a fan of animated movies especially European and Japanese ones. He did used this movie as one of his inspirations with the floating islands, the floating rock substance and of course similar robots.

I can understand needing to change the name in widely Spanish-speaking countries, but if it's in an English context, it's not offensive at all. Besides, I think it was named after a moving island in an old book (Gulliver's Travels? I forget.).
(...Disney re-dubbed it? When? How? WHY?)
