Description
Mightyena is a Pokemon that I feel is severely overlooked. While most of this Pokemon's stats are low (with its Attack stat being the highest), Mightyena can still be a very formidable Pokemon when used correctly. Now Mightyena holds a special place in my heart amongst all the other canine Pokemon primarily because it was a Poochyena that was the very first Pokemon I ever caught when I started playing Pokemon (or maybe it was a Wurmple? I don't remember but it was one of the two). So I really wanted to try and figure out a way to make this Pokemon work competitively.
Mightyena has two abilities that work very well on it. Intimidate is always good on a Pokemon if you want to lower your opponent's Attack. Although it won't make much of a difference to Mightyena since its defenses are so low, but it can always be good for the long run of the battle. But a better ability to run on Mightyena is the one I'm running on mine, its Hidden Ability Moxie. This ability will automatically give Mightyena +1 in its Attack whenever it knocks out an opponent. This is especially good since Mightyena's physical attack is the best stat that it has.
Now, as a warning, my Mightyena's Moveset and strategy are primarily for single battles. I have yet to fully test out how well it works on Double Battles or even if it works at all.
Here's my Mightyena's summary:
Nature: Adamant
Held Item: Focus Sash
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 6 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
-Sucker Punch
-Play Rough
-Fire Fang
-Super Fang
Sucker Punch is the perfect STAB move to make up for Mightyena's speed as it gives it priority and will hit the opponent first before they attack. The downside to this move is that it will fail if your opponent isn't going to use an attacking move, so you almost need to predict when your opponent will attack in order to know when to use Sucker Punch. That is why it's great for it to hold a Focus Sash since it will guarantee that Mightyena will not be OHKO'd. Not only that, but it gives you the perfect opportunity to use Sucker Punch since your opponent will need to use one more attack to finish your Mightyena off. Play Rough is an ideal move to run on Mightyena as it covers its weakness to Fighting-types and also helps against opposing Dark-types and even Dragons! Fire Fang helps Mightyena fare against its weakness to Bug-types and acts as coverage to Grass, Ice, and ever so bulky Steel-types. Super Fang is an ideal move to run on a weaker Pokemon like Mightyena as it will always cut a Pokemon's HP in half no matter what, and this can be a great strategy to weaken your opponent's Pokemon in order for Mightyena to take them out easier. Or at the very least leave them more susceptible to your other Pokemon after Mightyena's been KO'd.
Maximum attack and speed investment with an Adamant nature make Mightyena as powerful and fast as possible. That being said, Mightyena does not have great speed. So running one with a Jolly Nature is acceptable if you want to make it faster, but it has little use otherwise and severely weakens Mightyena's offensive presence (what little it has anyway). So you can alternatively run an Adamant nature to help Mightyena hit opponents much harder at the cost of not being as fast, but that's really why you rely on Sucker Punch. Moxie is the ideal ability to run on an offensive Mightyena, as it will boost its attack stat every time it takes out an opponent's Pokemon.
Of course, Mightyena can run a variety of other moves. Here are some suggestions.
-Crunch is a great substitute STAB move to run on your Mightyena if you're not up to using Sucker Punch and predicting when to use it. Just know you'll have no priority and be outsped by a lot of Pokemon.
-Poison Fang can be a good move to run on Mightyena, as it can cover its weakness to Fairy-types. While the move itself is weak, it has a 50/50 chance of BADLY poisoning your opponent. A move that does damage while having the potential to inflict Toxic is always good to have.
-Iron Tail is another good move to cover Mightyena's weakness to Fairy. But it has low accuracy so I really wouldn't recommend it.
-Dig can be a good move for Mightyena to have as it allows it to dodge an opponent's move while it's underground. But there's a major drawback to Dig that can be easily exploited. If your Pokemon uses Dig and your opponent uses Earthquake, not only will it be hit underground but it'll also take double the damage. And since Earthquake is a very commonly used move in competitive play, I'd say it's not worth the risk.
-You can also put a Life Orb on your Mightyena to help increase its damage output. But it'll lose HP every time it uses an attack. This, by all means, is a viable strategy if you want to further maximize your Mightyena's damage output, but don't expect to stay out on the field for too long.
-Quick Claw can be another item for Mightyena to hold as it helps its low speed stat and allows it to hit opponents first. The drawback to this item is that it happens completely randomly, meaning there's always the chance it won't activate when you really need it to. So it's not worth the risk if you ask me.
Notes:
I chose "NANA" for my Mightyena's nickname primarily because that is the nickname Ruby gave to his Mightyena in the Pokemon Adventures Manga. But there are plenty of other nicknames to choose from.
I actually nicknamed the first Poochyena I ever caught "Maxwell" after my first dog.
Here's another good idea if you still can't think of a good nickname. Believe it or not, Poochyena and Mightyena are not based on wolves, jackals, or any sort of wild dogs. They are in fact HYENAS (seriously, it's in their names)! So you could nickname yours after any one of the Hyenas from The Lion King. Banzai and Ed for males, and you can nickname your Mightyena Shenzi if it's female. XD
