Description Meet Alexander Dimitrovich Illanov, or Alex as he is called by his friends. He's an old German Shepherd character I created back for my Road Rover fanfics in 2000 that I've decided to bring back and update with a new picture of him. Hopefully we will see more of him from now on.

And now, for a bit of backstory:

Alexander Illanov was born a human into a Russian military family right before the dissolution of the Soviet Union. His father was a high-ranking officer in the Soviet army, and he groomed his son to follow him in his footsteps. But the collapse of the USSR proved trying times for the Illanov family, with budget cuts decimating the army and reducing wages.

Thus, when Illanov finally graduated from military academy, he found himself serving in a military that was mostly in disarray and rampant with corruption. Nonetheless, Illanov started rising in the ranks and making a name for himself as a very competent officer. But the pay was poor, and Illanov was later persuaded by some of his friends in the officer core to delve in arms smuggling.

This became a lucrative affair, and Illanov proved his skills at logistics and negotiation in moving arms to groups and nations around the world. But as this going, change was afoot in Russia. Under Vladimir Putin, the Russian Federation began reforming the army and weeding out corruption in ranks. While still a far cry of the Soviet days, it was clear things would become difficult for Illanov and his friends.

In fact, Illanov nearly got snared in an investigation into illegal Russian arms smuggling, but fate stepped in. And Illanov would be confronted by what would eventually become his arch-nemesis: ZAVO the artificial intelligence.

ZAVO was called Matrix at the time, and harboured a deep hatred of all organic life on Earth. Thusly, the AI began stealing nuclear weapons from poorly defended stockpiles and missile silos, attaching them to a flying platform called the Totallator. Matrix aimed to start a nuclear war by simultaniously destroying the Russian government and launching missiles at the United States and China.

Illanov had found himself trapped on a train carrying nuclear weapons that Matrix had hijacked. But he learned how to avoid Matrix's robotic forces and sneak onboard the Totallator. Thanks to his cunning, combat abilities and a bit of luck, Illanov managed to crash the Totallator into the Caspian Sea. Though Matrix escaped, Illanov had stopped his plan. The Russian government thanked him for his efforts, gave him a promotion as well as immunity from prosecution in the investigation.

Even so, Illanov still found the wages disappointing and soon he was drawn back into the world of arms dealing. But it proved even more difficult for the officer. Not only were reforms in the Russian military making it harder to procure weapons, Illanov's conscience started to bother him and kept him from the most lucrative (and possibly immoral) deals. And it would come to a head in Colombia.

In Colombia a war had broken out between the Spider Cartel, the world's biggest drug cartel, and the KH Military, a group of high-tech wolf terrorist. The United Nations, with the aid of the Road Rovers, had launched an operation to intervene between the two warring groups. Illanov went to Colombia, looking to score a big deal in the war. Unfortunately, the deal took a turn for the worse and Illanov had to be rescued by a Rover team led by Striker.

In the process of being rescued, Illanov fell into a Transdogmafier, a machine that turns ordinary dogs into anthro canines. But on the human, the machine mutated Illanov into a German Shepherd anthro. Horrified by his change, Illanov took this as a sign to change his ways. In exchange for his help in stopping further arms trafficking in the war, Illanov was not turned over to authorities. Striker befriended the Russian, and eventually the spaniel and Illanov (along with Phoenix, who joined later) formed the core members of their own special team, Unit STRIKE.
