So now that I'm awake I can properly write about this costume! Long story short I was asked to judge the costume contest at Anime Evolution 2013 and realized I didn't actually have an anime costume I could wear. I had been wanting to cosplay Maou for ages and after spotting a beautiful red fabric in the clearance section of a local fabric store I knew what I wanted to make. This costume is another one of my efforts to buy entirely from the clearance section and spend no more than $10 a metre max to show people that great fabrics and costumes don't need to cost an arm and a leg.

Here is a breakdown of the material costs:
deep red = $4
bright red = $6
black = $4
drapery linen = $3
weird cotton stuff = $2
broadcloth = $4
fur = $7

Of course I bought a truckload of the deep red for the dress and my biggest petticoat, but it was still pretty easy on the wallet for a huge dress. The most expensive part of the whole outfit was probably the ridiculous amount of horsehair tape for the dress and petticoat hem to keep the skirts flouncing out. While I'm at it, here are the layers involved in this costume you can't see: corset (not worn here and made by Miko), chemise, corded petticoat, over petticoat, dress and jacket

The heat made that many layers a little difficult to wear and I had bruised my heel the week earlier so all in all I could have picked a better time to wear it, but I didn't, and it was still a lot of fun.
