Description

The horse who put CBF on the map.

This unassuming bay mare was bred to race, but as a result of her elderly breeder's death and subsequent estate sale (including all the horses), she never trained for the track. CBF bought her quite cheaply as a three-year-old, intending her to be a quick and easy first resale project for Émile's teenaged daughter. It became apparent soon after starting "Winnie" under saddle that she was incredibly smart and sensitive, and almost recklessly brave. Her speed, surefootedness, and heart catapulted her up the levels with Émile instead, culminating in four career 4* (old format) completions across three years: two at Kentucky (2011, 2013), one at Badminton (2012), and one at Burghley (2012). After her summer break following Kentucky 2013, the plan had been to spend another year in Europe with Émile aiming for Pau. While getting legged back up in the fall, Winnie misjudged a distance and put a hind leg through the top of a rotting table while schooling at home, shredding the soft tissue and doing irreparable damage to the tendons. With her competitive career cut brutally short, Winnie was slowly rehabilitated until pasture sound, and retired to the life of a broodmare.

While she had undergone embryo transfers in the past, she carried and birthed a foal for the first time in 2015 . As a competition horse, she usually carried tension in the dressage and was never a flashy mover, getting her best scores for obedience in a test rather than the beauty of the movements. She had the occasional rail down showjumping if she was allowed to get flat in the canter, but she was a phenomenal cross-country horse with seemingly unlimited reserves of stamina and speed. She never saw an obstacle she wouldn't jump, and was so quick with her feet that she could save herself if ever there was a tricky spot. She is best crossed on good-moving, scopey, uphill stallions to improve upon her weaknesses.

Pictured in 2011 at the Kentucky 3-Day, her first 4* (old format), where she finished clear inside the time despite losing a shoe at the Normandy Bank (22).
