To add more dimension to the coloring, you should definitely try to add more shades within the shadows, in addition to making them stronger. Realistic shadows have many varying values to them, not simply one, so I think that adding more layers of shadow could help bring a more realistic gradient.Keep in mind your light source and the shape of the piece the light is falling to. Finally, I think that adding textures would help you avoid the issue of everything appearing to be made of the same somewhat-plasticy material. :3
About the eyes in particular, I'd suggest adding some shadows to the whites of the eyes. They're almost never stark white, and will have at least a little shading at the corners and below the upper eyelid.
