This is close to being completely irrelevant, but I’m reminded of the Andre Norton sf story Yurth Burden [link] Just the imagery, mind you, since the story itself has nothing else in common with your picture. Don’t consider it a recommendation, I’m afraid. Norton wrote some fun stories and I lived on them when I was a kid, but this was a ‘story with a moral’ and was forced and a bit preachy. She did use the spherical spacecraft several times in the 50's and 60's
