Description while browsing through some of the Spider-man galleries I came across some great stuff done portraying the Scarlet Spider and was inspired to draw this. Yes the whole Close Saga ended up a huge mess! However, I missed the classic Spidey stories and grew up on the stories from the nineties. Whatever can be said about the writing, the artwork was mostly fantastic and was the reason I decided to draw the old web-head.

Part of the criticism of the stories was that they were too dark and moody, with Peter withdrawing into the persona of The Spider, and we lost the good ol' witty Spider-man. And I do agree to some extent. But due to the nature of the themes I don't think they had a choice. I loved that there were two Spidey's and the contrasting emotions they were going through when wondering who was the original and who was the clone created by the Jackal. However, even though they were essentially competing for a single identity, they had a great brotherly chemistry and there were a few really great moments, not least towards the end.

The slightly darker atmosphere, and the internal struggles of the two spider-men is something that I've tried to show here: Ben looking upwards in the hope of having the life he's never had, and Peter looking downwards, contemplating all he has to lose.....I hope you like it...

hope to see you do a straight on scarlet spider some day ( the original, not the new one) as this one and the doc octopus fighting scarlet one tend to hide his mask. but outstanding work here. was hoping to see your take on mj but checked your gallery, and nope! i love her.... well, i have even created an ILOVEMARYJANE group for her.

wow that is really very kind of you to say. this is one of my best ones, because the picture shows a very important time of Spider-Man's life. Personally, I feel I could improve technically, but with this piece I am very happy with the mood, and the story it tells..

thank you!

ha ha! me too! and trust me i did try a number of poses! but in the end they didn't allow me to convey what I wanted to about his character. would have been good to have both!

next time eh?!

I have an idea, but you may not like it.

It's what I would do with it if you were to allow me to ink it for you. But I think it would be even cooler if you drew it... a variant pencil version with Peter and Ben's poses switched. show Ben crouching where Peter is in the original, and have Peter looking towards the sky instead of Ben. I know that may not convey the original mood you were going for, but it might look cool. It could maybe have the same mood, with Peter looking up pondering giving up the webs while Ben is preparing to swing down into the city.

It's a cool drawing as it is tho man, I think it's great.

In fact i think the idea is great. I will redo the pencils if you'll ink it?

ayelid In reply to StudioCombine [2010-10-03 00:14:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh, man, I'd consider it a privelege to ink such great pencils, dude. I've agreed to about five or six other drawings lately so I'll have to add it to the list, but oh yeah, I'd certainly do that if you get around to a variant version.

And if I do I'll definitely credit you as the original artist, if you don't mind me adding the inks to my gallery, that is .

Very nice work, I see some influence from John Romita Jr. here.
I also used to like Ben a lot and felt that killing him off just to cut ties with the messy storyline was brash, but at least in the revision of the Clone saga he was given a much nicer send off.

StudioCombine In reply to MatiasSoto [2010-10-02 06:17:59 +0000 UTC]

wow thanks! Romita Jr. is a favorite of mine but I can't say I was thinking of his style when I did this. But maybe the influence crept in there anyway. Romita's stint in these stories was the first time I saw his art. It was very distinctive (of course with some hints of Romita Sr.) And maybe I see where you're coming from now: because as I think about it, Bagley's work was very dynamic and great for action. Where Romita Jr, was also very good the cityscapes, moody skies etc. His art was also very good at depicting the personal stories with Ben, Peter and MJ.

ps where was the revised story printed?

Ooh, I love it! I really like the general emotions you've captured as well, not easy when the characters are in full face masks, I might add! I don't really want to write a critique, but as for constructive criticism, I would say the only thing I can see is that it looks like you've cut Ben's torso too short behind Peter, and it might just be me, but I think his torso needs to be a bit higher behind Spidey. That way we can see more of him and he doesn't seem like he has short thighs. Like I said, this might just be me, I seem to tend to elongate the legs on my men.

StudioCombine In reply to Chanteloupe [2010-10-01 20:28:18 +0000 UTC]

I just saw it, and I agree to an extent. I think what I've done is place his legs (calfs) too high, giving the impression of his torso being too low.

Thanks for noticing, and I will adjust it and see how it goes.

Alas, poor Ben. There was potential there, and it was just squandered. A real shame.

StudioCombine In reply to tigerfangart [2010-10-01 20:32:53 +0000 UTC]

I agree. I don't think I ever wanted him to replace Peter, but as a character he did grow on me. It was nice to see Pete not be so lonely, and have a sibling of sorts... but there can really only ever be one Spider-Man (or that's how the writers must have seen it).

sad how the good guys never seem to come back but the bad guys just don't stay dead!

If it were me, I would have taken Ben out to the West Coast or something, have him start his own career as Scarlet Spider and his own life independent of Peter. Rather than having him take over and then get killed.

StudioCombine In reply to tigerfangart [2010-10-02 06:25:39 +0000 UTC]

totally agree about the relocation... there was no real need for his death. but I wonder if his dying (as a hero) was a better send-off than walking away into obscurity? Kind of like how so many artists increase in fame after death...

also, there aren't many places which are as good for web-swinging as NYC. (though I'm not from the US so do correct me if I'm wrong)

Maybe, I dunno. I just feel that Ben had more potential branching off on his own than he did supplanting the original.

they could have altered his powers/abilities through some wacky storyline and in that way made him unique. he then could follow his own life/adventures without being identical to Spidey. I think we're really getting somewhere here, and need to make some phone-calls to Marvel...

I concur; in the revised version of the Clone Saga that was published last year he was left alive in the end, but I think the status of that story is that it's an alternate version and not the official version :S

The problem is they went too far. They saw it selling and went way past the point of nausea.

MatiasSoto In reply to tigerfangart [2010-10-02 11:00:48 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they saw the titles were selling better and went to strech it,at that time Marvel was nearly backrupt so anything that sold well wouldn't be let end 'till they milked all the money they could.

there were some (or many) very low points.... i try not to think about it. I wonder what the newer writers might have done with the same idea today? But I can never see the story drawn by different artists.....
