Description On the last day of FurIdaho, at the end of March this year, I didn't have much to do while manning my artist alley table, so I had the idea to use the new "Textured" artist trading card paper I had recently bought. I had also been to a tattoo appointment the previous day during which I noticed a technique my tattoo artist was using in the pencil sketches she has hanging on the walls in her cubicle: a grid of lines to make fish scales. Remembering that, I decided to try the grid on a simple goldfish. I LOVE it. The grid technique, I mean. I always wanted to figure out a way to make good-looking, consistent scales and this is the best ^^

The rainbow coloring was just for fun, to make the drawing something I could really enjoy, but it inspired me to continue the pattern of rainbow animals while I was in the artist alley

Sakura Pigma Micron pen, Copic marker, Prismacolor colored pencil, and Sakura Gelly Roll gel pen on Strathmore 80 lb. Textured paper, 2.5x3.5"

Awwww This is so cute! I miss having goldfish...but every time i have one it dies after two hours after bringing it home from the pet store :C BTW the goldfish kinda reminds me of a game I played that had a very obvious title' Rainbow Goldfish'. the fish looks exactly like the one you drew just minus the sparkly rainbow scales xD

Thank you very much Goldfish are actually very needy fish, even though pet stores and popular culture always sell them as "beginners'" fish. They need a lot of water per fish, regular tank cleanings, water additives, proper temperature ranges, not too much food, tank filtering and aeration...I'm still learning about them, myself! I keep learning new things every year. I've had a lot of goldfish all my life, because my family has always had a fishtank, but it's taken this long for me to really feel like I'm a proper goldfish owner I've lost a lot of little fishies so I try my best to learn what went wrong and how to prevent it from happening again. Anyway, I guess my point is that it takes effort but I love keeping goldfish X3

Thank you! I've grown up with goldfish always, even despite my family moving almost every year when I was a kid, so I really adore the pretty, sweet creatures ^^

Looks excellent! How did you do the grid?

It's tough to describe in words, but I basically used a pencil to make curved lines, kinda like in a wire-frame model, to define the area where each scale would go. After that, I just drew a scale in each 'box' starting at the fish's head, inked it, and erased the grid ^_^

Oh! That's so simple! It came out really well, I think I might try that in the future.
