Description An oldish Raku piece I did in a college class last year, I really didn't have that much luck with the glazes and such, but it looks realy purdy in the photo...

Oh this was a DD! I was amazed at how many faves and comments you got!

But this deserves a DD, you don't much see fired pieces on the DD board. Very nice. I'm not that great with pottery and such. For some reason, I want to put some sand in it and around it! ^_^ I guess cause it reminds me of a shell. lol

Its really nice to see someone else who is into ceramics, this is the first Ive seen anyway...not that I have any of my work on here..maybe I should...anyway.. this is very creative..I love the colors and maybe its just the photo but I think the glazes came out great - gives it a natural feel - did you mix the glaze yourself?

I can't rember what the glaze was, but I didn't mix it. I was some mystery raku glaze I found under the sink in our school's glaze room...

That's incredible. I swore it really was a shell, or a rock, or something of the sort. It certainly is a piece to enjoy.

Sorry for a stupid question. What is a raku?

eRiQ In reply to reed682 [2006-02-22 18:41:43 +0000 UTC]

Raku (樂 is a form of Japanese pottery characterized by low firing temperatures (resulting in a fairly porous clay body), lead glazes, and the removal of pieces from the kiln while still glowing hot. In the traditional Japanese firing process, the pot is removed from the hot kiln and put directly into water or allowed to cool in the open air. Raku is considered the traditional method for creating clay bowls for the Japanese tea ceremony. Raku tea bowls are hand-made from earthenware, each with a unique shape and style.

The term raku is derived from the Kanji character meaning "enjoyment" or "ease". For fifteen generations, it has been the title and seal used by a dynasty of potters whose work formed the central tradition of Japanese raku.

Actually, before being quenched the hot raku piece is buried in sawdust, newspaper, or some other falmable material, and is sealed off to smoulder for a while. That is how you get that dark black in the bare clay.

*though on this piece the pot wasn't completely buried so that's why the spiral isn't completely black . Funny how mistakes can have such awesome results sometimes...

Hmmm, this is really interesting. It seems somewhat sinister in a certain way. I thought it was meant to be representing a shell, but the curved claw-like hook seems to have curled around in a strangle hold on the 'shell', having since killed it, the shell then appears to have been left lying empty...

That is really cool lol, well done

Great piece! Much better than any of the raku pieces I ever made. I love the hint of shell. And by the way, apparently glazes for raku aren't trivial. One of the things I learned is put PLENTY of glaze on.

stuiethegod In reply to PatGoltz [2006-02-23 04:24:22 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I learned that the hard way... I've had a lot of crappy raku pots.

I haven't had the opportunity to make enough crappy raku pots. Maybe someday.

When I first saw the little thumbnail for this peice I actual thought it was a hermit crab reaching out from its shell. Nicely done. Not sure if thats what you were going for but I like it.
