The Centaur was developed to replace the older APCs in service with the Federal Army.

Development of the Centaur began in late 1970 after the Federal Army requested a replacement for its Mule APCs. The Federal Army experienced a major defeat at the battle of East Millis, the 98th Mechanized Infantry Battalion was on retreat with the Democratic Republic's 12th Armored Division chasing behind them, their Mule APCs were rather slow only capable of reaching a speed of 55KPH, the 12th Armored Division soon catch up to them, their Halberd IIs were equipped with 100mm gun that could easily pierce through the Mule APC's armor, the Federal Republic loses 684 personnels and 57 Mule APCs during their retreat, only 3 Mule APCs survives and make it back into Federal Republic's territory.

The Federal Army requested for a modular tracked vehicle that could resist land mines and AP rounds, HEAT rounds, and ATGM, weights less than 50 ton, and could outrun the Democratic Republic's Halberd II MBT. Several companies submitted their designs and Leonard Automobile's design was chosen as the new APC for the Federal Army, the new design is designated the M1120 and given the name 'Centaur', it was heavily armored with the latest composite armor technology, could be equipped with a wide variety of turret such as 30mm or 100mm unmanned turret, or more specialized one such as ADATS turret. The Centaur is powered by a 1000HP Merlin M20L, it could reach the speed of 75KPH easily, and when the limiter is removed, it could reach a speed of 90KPH, this however shorten the lifespan of the engine.

Three variant of the Centaur were developed, a standard turret-less variant (A), a 30mm turret variant (B), and a 100mm turret variant (C), the C variant used the turret from Erline Groups' rejected Mordred MBT prototype that was redesigned to be unmanned and operated remotely.

Production began in 1989 alongside the Mordred MBT.

During its short wartime service in the Artorian Civil War, the 98th Mechanized Infantry Battalion led an assault against Democratic Republic forces in East Millis with their brand new Centaur IFVs, the Centaur IFVs shrugged AP and HEAT rounds from the Halber II's 100mm gun easily unless it was aimed at the weaker spot such as the engine block, ramp or tracks, and their anti-tank landmines and ATGMs only manages to immobilize the Centaur. the 98th Mechanized Infantry Battalion was out for vengeance and quickly overrun and take over the city in a single night.

The Federal Army planned to immediately phase out all Mule APCs with the Centaur, its expensive price however prevented the the Federal Army from doing this and only units operating in the frontline got their Mule APCs replaced with Centaur IFVs. After the Artorian Civil War, the Federal Army and Marine slowly phase out all Mule APCs in service and replace them with Centaur IFVs.
