I got really tired of taking so long coming up with a even remotely decent pose, so I am going to take the bull by the horns and start studying the construction of poses a bit more thoroughly. You can expect more studies like this in the coming days.

The idea behind this is to avoid starting with the details. Instead, the concept is something like this:

  • Locate the joints in the pose, and mark them somehow (small balls in the sketch).

  • Join the joints with lines, to get an idea about how your pose will look. At this point you will see if the pose is balanced the way you want it to be.

  • Now is the time to start building the body. Use basic shapes as long as possible - your goal is to add volume to your figure.

  • If everything looks decent, you can start adding details and work your way toward a final result, which will vary depending on what style and medium you are aiming for.

  • I want to thank so much for providing the poses that I used as reference for this. They are SO helpful!

Your technique is very good, and has accurate proportions. I appreciate that you didn't overdo the body physique, and the poses are unique and rounded with character. I also like how you drew in more than one perspective, which is nice. For a beginner, the complexity of the body you drew may be a little bit much, and an action line, maybe more basic would help. On the body in the upper lefthand corner, the right arm is a teeny bit wonky. Other than this, this is a marvelous piece of art, keep drawing.and the poses ARE very dynamic lol. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

I get the feeling you confirmed my way of drawing people. I suddenly have the urge to try doing this more often. and you make a good point: building up volume is important. I'm glad to see I have an idea of what to do

This looks definitely helpful. I have trouble drawing the body at times. i've been doing the box stick method only i would draw the head first and detail it. I always try to break the habit but I can't. I really need to work on that. Plus, I sometimes draw the head too big.. :/
But yeah, this method looks pretty simple yet constructive. I'll definitely try it. Thanks for sharing!

I never quite understood the purpose of drawing less detailed references based on real life references. I understand why you would use a reference to make your art or to practice shading or something like that... but what is the purpose of the pose references? How do they help you?

    πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

StyrbjornAndersson In reply to TapSkill [2013-02-04 08:59:10 +0000 UTC]

Very good question! Drawing pictures like these, for me ast least, serves several purposes. One purpose is that every pose I draw will be embedded into both my muscle memory and into a subconcious database of poses that over time teaches me what looks right, and what does not. Another purpose of these poses is the aim for finding a way to engineer poses from scratch. I believe that "reverse engineering" real life poses might be one way to accomplish this.

TapSkill In reply to StyrbjornAndersson [2013-02-06 00:35:12 +0000 UTC]

    Good answer. ^_^

I do not share that muscle memory argument, but I dissect images in my mind all the time. When I look at art on here, I see how those images are made up of shapes and stroke paths. It is actually very fun to dissect art in that way sometimes, but sometimes, I wish I could stop doing it. XD
