Description A 2 hour project, on behalf of a Harry Potter crazy acquaintance. I googled some Harry Potter photos for reference, and did a rather sketchy pencil drawing. I usually spend more time working on the details, but I felt I wanted to attempt going "quick" (whether or not one regards 2 hours as quick is of course a matter of opinion) on this one.

Thank you! As I tried to complete this one quickly (it was a request from a friend) I actually placed a paper on my screen and did a quick sketch by tracing the reference picture (which I put together in photoshop). I find that a good method to get the proportions done really quick in a picture you want to be as accurate as possible. I very seldom do this when I practice, since it's not a very effective way to learn, but it's fast and effective.

Of course, it's only good for getting the right things in the right places. You still have to do the shading by hand

its a very good drawing. I think one shouldn't worry about how much time has gone in to a drawing, as long as your happy with the end result.

You asked for critique, here are my 2 cents.

Very nicely done. I do believe though that you should try to use less time on each drawing, since this project of yours is supposed to get you away from your need to be perfect. A sketch should not take 2 hours, this look like a almost finished piece. You use lots of photos as reference and it shows. Have you tried to just watch some photos and then drawing from memory alone? I believe that by doing that you would get away from pictures that look like sketchy versions of black and white photos and get more into/find your own style.

Thanks for your advice. Just to clarify - this one was supposed to be a finished piece - I just stopped a bit earlier than usual, since I thought I had arrived at a working result.

I'll definitely try to become less dependant on reference pictures, though - it is actually one of my main goals by jonining deviantART. Drawing every day will hopefully prove a useful way to develop the skills needed to draw from memory alone (or to just make up pictures from scratch ).
