Description Here's a piece of art I did for the amazing webcomic, "The Dreamer," written and illustrated by . The concept is simple; Bea ends up in a ballroom, attired in the latest 1770s fashions, and there's Alan, actually dressed up for once, either asking her to dance or inviting her outside. There's Betsy Loring in the immediate background, with an even higher hairstyle than Bea's, and literally green with jealousy.

I painted this with acrylics, on watercolor paper sealed with matte medium- no colored pencils or alcohol markers or any of that.

Wow, this is acrylics? I must admit, my first impression was that is must be color pencils. This is so detailed, I especially love their dresses

Aaah, I love this! But I'm having personal issues...lol...Bea isn't Bea without her huge mass of brunette hair (which makes her oh-so-me)!! I understand, though. The wig was certainly high fashion.

suburbanbeatnik In reply to singerofpearls [2009-04-11 09:55:04 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean! She's not wearing a wig, though... the actual fashion of the time was to put up your own hair, supplemented with hairpieces, lard and lots of powder.

This is very beautiful. I love how you drew their elaborate outfits. The background is very wonderful as well. Lucky Bea...she's got a very handsome fellow that has caught her attention. (He would be my type of man back then, especially because he's blond. ) Ha ha, that Betsy lady sure does look jealous. I like all the expressions in this painting. I don't see how women could walk (or breathe) in those dresses back in the late 1700's!

suburbanbeatnik In reply to Foxy-Lady-Jacqueline [2009-03-03 11:52:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Yeah, the combination of the heavily boned stays and the wide paniers would have made getting about difficult, that's for sure. But who's to complain, when a dashing gentleman is admiring you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Foxy-Lady-Jacqueline In reply to suburbanbeatnik [2009-03-03 15:17:05 +0000 UTC]

It also seems like it would be a bit difficult to try to sit down in one of those dresses as well. But you're right...I suppose the all the discomfort of looking good in one of these outfits is worth it when, as you put it, a "dashing gentleman is admiring you". I most definitely would not have minded at all, if I had lived back in that era.
