Does one of you clay experts know a more modern form of clay that is probably more expensive but way easier to mold?

I spent quite a lot of money on FIMO but it is getting hard now and I could throw away tons of clay.

The goal is to make scale 1:3 detailed items and I'm not a real expert in sculpting.
Thnx

Maybe try FIMO Soft or Super Sculpey. There is also a new type of clay called Sculpey Soufflé and it's super airy and soft. There is another brand called Cernit, but it's hard to come by. It also is a bit firm, but I love working with hard clay because I can get a lot of detail from it.

You can also condition the clay with a few drops of liquid sculpey, or run it through a clay "pasta" machine.

I would just recommend trying one of each brand and seeing which is best that you like to practice with.

Sorry for the late reply! If you have any other questions, I'll try to answer the best I can.

No problem, glad you're here. I have the Fimo and threw away half of it now. I tried it with olive oil but only some worked. If it's just too dry then I don't have a solution yet. I have made some food for the dolls with it, looking great but too small and now I've lost motivation to start after a year now. I even bought some exotics with gold and glitters

I think Cernit is a bit of the same but had to pros and cons. I want to be able to make stuff and cast it when I have money to buy resin and vacuumbox etc and all that :\  so I can try to finally get at least some money back from this very expensive hobby.

One time I had a pasta machine but they sold me a bad one second hand and it was broken before I could even use it.
Sounds like I can't make it entirely from clay.
I want my items to be super super smooth but maybe I should make it as good as possible then cast it, then grind it smooth and recast that. Sounds like another 10 years project grrr

Have you tried air dry clay? That's super soft too and all you have to do is add water if it gets dry. You can sand it to a smooth finish for casting.

Sugar-Bonnie In reply to Pagan-Child [2012-10-26 16:24:35 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The wood patterned plate is probably from discontinued re-ment series. It's some sort of plastic, but it feels like paper.

How come people always put a coin up to it? I don't know how big a cent is. :C
Why not something international? A staple, or a pen.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sugar-Bonnie In reply to Danmies [2012-09-21 19:05:16 +0000 UTC]

A penny is 19mm in diameter.

But the penny is jut a reference, the size of the actual food is what's important as that size varies from how big/small you made the food. All you need to know with the penny, or anything else, is that the food is small.
