DO NOT SEND ME NOTES WITH YOUR COMMENTARY. COMMENTS ARE DISABLED FOR A REASON.

This is something that has been on my mind for some time; it has always bothered me when people go to my commissions page and tell me that my prices are "too expensive". No, it's just that you don't have enough money in your pocket. Do you go to the grocery store with $0.50 and ask for a custom birthday cake? Of course not.

Initially, this was a rant... but then it occurred to me that the reason so many people find commission prices so unaffordable is because they underprice themselves. I see a lot of people - mostly novice artists - selling their art for 10 - which, by the way, is ten cents. It's true that when you're a novice and not that great at art, your commissions shouldn't cost much, but even at the start, you should ask to be fairly compensated for your time.

As your art improves, and as demand grows, increase your prices! Price your art for what you truly think is fair - don't ask for $50 just to see if you can get away with it, but if you genuinely put several hours of effort into it and have a stunning result, go for it!

Personally, I like/would like to charge at least $5 an hour; national minimum wage in the U.S. is $7.50. Though I don't necessarily think that people should try to make art their "job" and make genuine income off of it, come on - don't sell yourself for ten cents an hour. Your art is worth more than that, and so are you.
