Description
"Mousemask!" A soft voice called out to the pale she-cat and made her freeze.
Mousemask had managed to avoid her mother for about half a moon now. It was easy, when Frozensky was on patrol all the time as punishment. It wasn’t enough, since Frozensky had found free time to find her.
Instead of replying, Mousemask felt herself crawl inwards inside her body, as if she didn’t inhabit it and could get out of whatever conversation her mother wanted. Nothing else could be said to fix anything and Mousemask wanted nothing to do with her.
“Mousemask, please talk to me,” Frozensky begged, she was next to her from the sounds of things or many tail lengths away, Mousemask wasn’t quite sure.
“We need to talk now that Crowleaf is back in camp, you need to meet Adderflame and Vixenkit,” Frozensky begun to speak and she kept on talking but she started to sound like a faint whisper, sort of like far away water.
The mention of Crowleaf’s name made Mousemask ache and she closed her eyes. After the news had been revealed, Crowleaf had left camp. He had been missing for days and unlike with Ravensnap before, Mousemask hadn’t held out hope of his return. If Mousemask hadn’t been such a hopeless hunter and promised Flickerhop she’d stay, she would have left too.
Thankfully, a few days ago, Crowleaf had returned. He had gotten a lecture, from both Blackstar and Flickerhop for scaring everyone but Mousemask didn’t care. She was happy he was back with her, safe. He was the only family Mousemask truly had left after all.
“Mousemask, where are you going?” Frozensky called out and it ripped Mousemask away from her thoughts.
Apparently, her body did what her mind and heart wanted to do, walk away. Surprised, Mousemask blinked, before she looked over her shoulder at Frozensky. Her mother… or that cat since Mousemask didn’t think of her as much of a mother, looked so pitiful, like she was the victim. Like she was the one that had been lied to her whole life, only to have it ripped away in front of the entire clan, have her actions and reactions judged, and have even the nice cats not look at you quite the same anymore.
“Please, your brother won’t… None of this is Vixenkit’s fault and she deserves to know you. Adderflame would also really like to meet you,” Frozensky suggested quietly, as her pleading gaze met Mousemask’s.
Anger grew in her chest and blazed like an inferno, and Mousemask couldn’t help the shuddering breaths she was taking. Her short and thin legs trembled and there was a lump of stone in her throat. Adderflame, her supposed father who wanted nothing to do with her now wanted to talk. With the daughter he did love. And Frozensky, the traitorous piece of fox-dung that made everything Mousemask did or was about her.
Without a second thought, Mousemask turned and lunged at Frozensky. Before she landed on her mother, Mousemask saw a glimpse of shock and fear in her eyes, but Mousemask didn’t care. How could she feel bad for her when all she felt was anger?
The small cream, white and brown she-cat knocked Frozensky over, so she fell on her side, while Mousemask herself slipped off her and crashed into the ground. Thankfully, she stuck out her front paws to avoid falling on her face, but the speed of the crash made her paws hurt a little. It didn’t stop Mousemask, who was on her side on the ground, from twisting around and trying to bite Frozensky.
“Stop!” A voice called out, but it didn’t matter, because Mousemask felt Frozensky’s fur and skin between her jaws.
There was the dull sound of footsteps on stone, but Mousemask had already started to kick Frozensky with her hind legs. But that left her open and soon, paws and a tug on her scruff separated them.
Frozensky was standing first, and Mousemaks glared at her as she pulled herself to her feet. There wasn’t a speck of blood on her snowy white pelt, Mousemask wasn’t the strong est and she hadn’t even gotten the chance to do any real damage. But ever the victim, Frozensky looked rattled and betrayed.
Good, because it wasn’t even a shadow of the hurt and betrayal Mousemask felt.
“What are you two doing?” Doepounce demanded as he stepped in between the mother and daughter, and Mousemask glowered at him.
It was only then that she realised that Marigoldstrike and Suncloud were holding her back, while Vulturecry and Diamondbreeze had pulled Frozensky away. Unlike her, Frozensky wasn’t looking for a fight so Vulturecry and Diamondbreeze didn’t have to hold her back like Marigoldstrike and Suncloud were doing to her.
“I’m sorry, Doepounce. We were talking and it got out of paw,” Frozensky apologised to the short cream tom.
“You’re a piece of fox dung!” Mousemask roared, unable to hold anything in and finally finding her words, “You’re a damn liar! All you care about is yourself and what you want. I don’t care anymore. Stop ruining my life!”
Tears started to well up in Mousemask’s eyes, but she didn’t back down, even if her voice shook and wobbled.
“Can’t you just leave me alone?” Mousemask sobbed, before she added in a slightly firmer voice, “If you love me… if you miss me. Then remember me because that’s the only way… you’ll be near me.”
Without another word, not even to the cats trying to talk to her or Doepounce who was trying to get her back to punish her, Mousemask walked away.
