This is very interesting. I just began drawing and this is just what I need. Especially the 'masses in motion' and the 'but what about things that don't exist?' part.

What about something like Marowak? I cannot for the life of me figure this kind of Pokemon out. They look like they have a snake-like body with legs to me; but when I draw that it looks really awkward

Try using a human upper torso, hamster base with a saurian tale. That's....as close as I can get for him ^.^;
Course, I normally just look at basic shapes if I get lost. I saw a pear for the body, the skull was a circle with a blunted triangle on it (two triangle "ears" too) a basic dinosaur tail and...well, noodly arms honestly. This is what I came up with in quick draw.

Never drawn Zoroark before myself, so I grabbed your pic and an official one and did some experiments.
There's always going to be a certain amount of making-stuff-up when you're drawing something like Zoroark, because nothing in nature has a stance like that. It basically has the same bodyplan as Lucario: bulky legs, wide hips and a thin wasp waist. Your drawing doesn't have that--it's straight vertical lines from shoulders to hips, and that means the legs then don't make sense. I suspect what's happening is you're drawing it with a learned series of curves and lines, but you're not actually thinking about the forms involved.
tl;dr, don't start with |, start with δΊΊ

Oh, I see. I used to use a reference for Zoroark once upon a time, but then I got used to drawing a SPECIFIC one, who happened to always wear a duster coat and was basically just a Pokemon form of a friend because I couldn't draw him as a human. So I guess I completely forgot about the waist. So if I were to use my current design, Zoroark would have human-like legs, or maybe Lucario-like legs, but if I give him the thin waist then the original leg design for the species should work, even in a completely upright position?
I guess I should really focus on skeletons more rather than just using the basic shapes that their bodies are made of, at least for the main characters. Thanks so much for your help, I'll try it out sometime, as soon as my scanner allows me to actually start scanning stuff.Β

Cool! I'm gonna try this and mix it with my way of thinking everything as basic shapes and see how it works out. Yes I know other people use the shape thing too but it works for me for the most part. My main problem is having to rely on bases more then I would like to do you have anything for that?

One, this is a paradox.
Two, while I understand the sentiment of "killing the buddha"; there are a couple things in life that are proven to work and thus should be listened to.
Three, I am running out of stupid things to say.
Four, this is a very well done and thought out tutorial XD

Question: When drawing pokΓ©mon with kinda odd body shapes compared to irl like Vespiquen, Latias, etc. How should one go about that?
Maybe not the best examples, but I think you get the idea. Basically: when no skeletons fit; What do? :/

sulfurbunny In reply to luccario8 [2015-04-30 23:16:47 +0000 UTC]
The reason I said look at skeletons is because most commonly people want to draw pokemon that have some sort of skeletal structure: eevees, riolus, those are the popular ones I think. Vespiquen and Lati?s are actually easier to handle than more natural-shaped Pokemon in my opinion, because their basic shapes are really simple. Let's do Latios right now: sta.sh/0lvzzh8fj85 It's literally two eggs joined by a string with some bits stuck on, no bones to worry about! All you need to do is figure out where to attach the bits. You could get more creative by looking up the closest thing to Latios, which would be a fighter jet, so if you want awesome pose ideas, that's a good thing to google for reference.
Same with Vespiquen. If you render it down to its simplest shapes it's half an egg with a ball stuck on top. Not too bad. Need references? Try those Elizabethan hoop skirt gowns, that's what it's based on.

This was amazingly helpful. I've been trying to draw for ages, going from one tutorial to another in my search for a style I liked, but this really made me realize what I actually need to do: Kill Buddha (and channel my inner kangarooΒ Β )
Thanks a lot!

Resolution to paradox : this isn't a "how to draw" tutorial, it's a "how to approach drawing" tutorial.
