Description So, with Kumoricon rapidly approaching and ~Zinkyu 's kick@$$ creation (as well as me finally settling into my new job), I have become motivated enough to create....THIS.

Hey, it's white - it looks feathered, and it covers my arm - CHECK. Definitely going to improve on this w/more practice though, not happy with the weight/movement/gaps in some areas, not to mention it's harder to hold the wing up when it's covered with felt.

Expect improvements & pictures (maybe a video?) after Kumoricon, though like this I may be coaxed into slapping up a few WIP posts~

And now, for your greater edification & amazement, I present to you my motivation~

I'm just wondering, do you have a video where it shows the movement of the wings with the arm covers? i'm very curious to see how everything looks when the arm covers are on!

Not yet, haven't been satisfied enough with any of my results to film them. Doesn't rule out future videos though, keep an eye out~

Glad to hear that your still going with this ^-^
I used this as a base for some wings for Articuno that I am working on (mine are going to be more styled after the show then made to look like real wings) for a con that I am headed for next year. I'll make sure to point people your way and share some of the finished photos with you!

I have a couple of questions, if you wouldn't mind answering?? For your arm covers, did you close them up on the underside, and if so, how did you do it? Were you able to make a fully closed sleeve that still allowed the feathers to move, or does it have gaps for each feather? Or is it just not closed on the underside at all?

Oh, and this probably belongs on your assembly tutorial, but do you think I'd be able to string the feathers together higher up than you did? Like, closer to the top of each shaft so the cord would be hidden by an arm cover? I don't really need the coverts for my purposes, but would still like to hide that somehow.

This... ended up being really long, sorry. I'm a big fan though; your wings are absolutely stunning.

No problem, questions help me hone my tutorial set even more~

I was able to close up the bottom & make the arm-covers actually cover the arm, that'll be explained once I've finished part 6 (aiming for end-of-month completion, depending on timely delivery of the materials ) and while the fabric-layered-with-felt makes the sleeve a bit more stiff than I wanted it does allow full wing movement both open and closed, I'll let ya'll judge exactly how successful it is~

And yes, you can choose to string higher on your feathers (yay experimentation!) I recommend using half-inch ribbon folded over for strength & flexibility, lemme know how it works out if you don't mind. And the coverts only helped hide the stringing in a couple of spots, was otherwise fine for the most part, the more feathers you have (or the closer they are together) the less hiding is needed.

Let me know if that helps~

How did you end up making the covers? Did you have to cut and glue on each individual feather?

YES. May try a different method for the tutorial...

Gah, I liked this a lot when I finished it but the more I stare at it (and test it with my wings) the more dissatisfied I get. ಠ_ರೃ This is the part that fabric imitates the worst (though I'm looking into stretchy fabric & just painting/printing the pattern on), the current felt is slightly better, gah wish there was a more feather-like material than faux fur which I am afraid to touch... :/

These look simply amazing! What are you making the feathers out of?

Sunnybrook1 In reply to DemonKitsuneOfNight [2012-09-17 01:45:07 +0000 UTC]

These ones? Just felt cut in feathery-shapes & hot-glued to some fabric-covered-plastic-mesh, sewn onto a simple sleeve.
