Imagine this - Erza is actually a great and distant descendant of Gilgamesh!
Plus judging by her personality and ethics it's plausible, that Gil actually somehow managed to get Arthuria or someone with the same kind of personality, ethics and morals as her for himself. Now skip couple of thousand generations later ( add a redhead to the gene pool) and we have Erza, who has both the warriors moral code of honor and Gils power, albeit on a immensely smaller scale than him.
