Description The Imperial Standard of the Okimi of Karafuto is the sole official flag of the country and has been in use since the final unification of the Island of Karafuto in 111 AD. The flag is a vertical Bicolor flag, comprising two thinner white stripes on the sides and a wider black stripe in the centre. In the middle of the centre stripe is the representation of a Snow Lilly, the country's national flower (which is also represented in the Imperial and Government Seal. Whilst the Snow Lilly was chosen as the national flower in account of the flower being given to the island as a gift from the Sun Goddes Amaterasu (the snow Lilly itself was the symbol of the Northern Kingdom which eventually united the land), the stripes reflect historic events which unfolded in the late first and early second centuries AD.* Currently there are two official explanation as to the colors and width of the stripes.

Some sources claim that such a flag was designed after the Wars Unification, when Isoroku, the Okimi of the northern Kingdom, united the Island for the first time in history. Prior to that, the Island was divided between three kingdoms. Isoroku signed a pact with the Kingdom of the South and in a campaign which lasted several years the Kingdom of the Mountains (the middle kingdom)**. The Kingdom of the Mountains was the largest of the three realms and controlled around a half of the entire island. As it was located in the centre of the island, the wider black stripe in the centre of the flag represents that particular kingdom, whilst the two narrower stripes represent the northern and southern kingdoms.

Another popular theory is that the flag symbolizes the aftermath of the Wars - the great constitutional reforms which followed the collapse of the Kingdom of the Mountains and the establishment of the Okimi of Karafuto. Legend tells us that Isoroku, the third son of the Okimi of the Northern Kingdom, was one of the few Karafutese to leave the island and travel the globe. Some accounts claim that he was captured in Persia but eventually managed to escape and return to the island. He did not return alone though, as he was helped by two Romans (who themselves were captures by the Persians), one Legionary Officer and one Greek born Administrative worker, who helped him escape and returned with him to Karafuto. After the war, the helped establish several reforms on the island and even brought the first script to Karafuto - the Hiragana - from a diplomatic mission to Japan. Isoroku accepted the Hiragana as the sole script of Karafuto, stating that the Kanji was to much of a complex system to be of any use. Together with the two Europeans, several constitutional reforms were established, which lasted all until 1893. Because of his importance, Isoroku was depicted on the national flag as the central wider stripe, while the two Europeans were represented as the thinner white striped on the sides.
