Description I literally outlined a picture of Sonic Unleashed and then re-edited the same colors of that screenshot in. Then I made a little edit to it to make Sonic SA style.

Which is best?

Hmmm...yeah, in-game in SA1. I kinda mixed the Sonic Adventure Sonic in all of it's appearances, the art, SA1, and SA2, just to get a general Sonic Adventure Sonic. He was pretty tal in SA2 and the artwork he's in.

I think the reason his quills looked more spikey in SA was mostly because of the graphics

I dunno. One thing that always turned me off about SA Sonic are said quils/spikes. Always made him look like less a cartoony hedgehog and more like someone stuck an blue olive with 4 sticks, then put a Mickey face with gelled back hair.

I appreciate the SU design refining the design so that he doesn't look too long and lanky.

As for the smile....well, he has ALWAYS smiled. One thing you're always garaunteed to see Sonic do alot of is smile.

Of course, Sonic had lost alot of his charm period when he was redesigned in 1999. It just felt like someone took a perfectly servicable design that had no need to look extreme and made it... extreme.

Everybody their opinion. Personally I prefer the SA quils because they look sharp despite the fact they're pointing down somewhat, like he's at least a bit hedgehog without looking cartoony.

I prefer Sonic not being cartoony because then he feels like someone you could actually talk to in Real Life and get a realistic response from, rather than being limited to cheesy lines and being less predictable/one-sided. (Though Ryan Drummond DID get some of the most cheesy lines in history...)

"Everybody their opinion."

*sigh* Is this not a given, anymore? I KNOW it's only a opinion.

Alot of what you said, which is in some way common ground we share, stems from bad writing, not looks. SatAM was probably the most cartoony, and yet he was arguably the most realistic character-wise. The Sonic of today never truly gets mad, or depressed, or jealous. All he does is "Heh heh this is interesting heh heh". A one note guy whose current writers think "Oh, being carefree means he can't emote for more than seconds at a time."

FTR, I don't mind either design.
