Description They Drive me to Drink!!

After seeing this chart [link] I just had to whip up my own versions. A couple of these are straight from that chart, but most are from my own demented mind. As a bit of a disclaimer I am not a mixologist, this was just for fun. I tried to color coordinate as best I could, as well as thinking about what flavors go together and what each character might order at the local nightclub. That's why Pinkie's is a cupcake and Derpy's is a muffin. There's a nice little shout out to DA's resident alkie at the bottom. Cheers Scotch!

If you actually try any of these, be sure to fill me in on what you thought of it. And remember, please drink responsibly.

Well, the reason is that I've actually never made any of these. I just made up what I thought might go together. If anyone wants to actually try any of them, I'll make a note of the proportions they used and add them to the chart. I'm shocked this is still getting comments seven years later.Β

Almost 6 years later and I'm still drinking these for the heavy nostalgia of everything. Man, I miss those days so much. Thanks Zech, these are timeless.

Twi, Luna, AJ, NMM, Trixie's is made of things I don't like, but it tastes good. Rarity's is very good too, but I'm not always in the mood for creamy stuff.

You gotta come up with a few more for some of the newer characters.

I'm working on a part 2.

Need drinks for Sunset, Starlight, Shining, Cadence, Chrysalis, Discord, Sombra, Octavia, Lyra, Bon Bon, the CMC... so many more...Β

I've got a few pseudo recipes Β written down, but I need to figure out proportions, since that's the thing most folks request on this one.Β

This might take a while, but I'll get it eventually.Β

*sigh*

Finland, of all places, is one of the countries it is impossible to find Baja Luna or Hpnotiq.
I doubt there is pineapple vodka available either. Triple Sec might be the most "exotic" one available in this land of luddites.

Can someone recommend replacements for these?
Would love to get them as close as possible to original.

Most of the others seem to be rate, but possible to get.

superwaffle350 In reply to SoanoS [2016-12-17 19:18:29 +0000 UTC]

Well, Baja Luna is Black Raspberry flavored, so I'd think that Chambord would be fine.Β
Hpnotiq is harder to replace... it tastes like passionfruit/mango vodka mixed with coconut rum and blue curacao.Β

The closest thing I can think of to replace it would be some blue kool-aid type beverage, like blue raspberry lemonade, mixed with overproof coconut rum. It won't be 100% the same, but the color will be the same, and still taste nice and semi-tropical.Β

Same way with the pineapple vodka. Just mix the juice and boozier vodka. Β I usually use higher proof when I mix so it doesn't get to be too sweet, but use your own judgement.Β

Hm. Thank you for the tips there. I had a look at the nearest two liquor stores to my location, and...
The way you can measure a country's civilisation is to take alook at their liquor stores.
You can tell Finnish alcohol culture is... undeveloped at best. It seems to all be watered-down high-purity industrial ethanol for the most part, which tastes absolutely vile.
Yeah, you guessed right, the common misconception here among people is that they think the purpose is to pass out as soon as possible.
Sometimes I really, really wish I could live somewhere else.

Chambord seems to be available so I wouldn't have to worry too much about Baja Luna sub then.

And seems that to create a Hpnotiq-style mix I can improvise.
Passionfruit/mango liquors are not too hard to get (seems to be popular with 20-something teens so almost a staple) and coconut rum (malibu) is an easy one. Curacao I already have got in my bar so there's that one sorted out.

Pineapple vodka seemed to be completely alien to the store assistants. And their database didn't even know of one. so sounds like I have to go with either pineapple cordial+vodka or a pineapple fruit wine (17,5% vol.).
Of course there is Plantation Original Dark Pineapple that I could add into my shelves but I think that might be overkill for something I use fairly rarely.
I might be best off making my own in the future though.

Hmm... Any ideas for Nannerl Pear 15% (Pear liquor, a violin bottle)? I have had one laying around on my shelf for a while now (inherited from parents who had it for 15 years or something before me). Still sealed.

And thanks again.

Well, I've been meaning to add some more cocktails, not that we've got more characters.Β

This chart is SOOOO old. It might take me a little research and brainstorming, but I'm going to make a Part 2 eventually.

If you have any favorite characters not represented, or a favorite cocktail/booze you'd like me to try playing with, by all means, let me know!Β
That pear might be a starting point, but I'll have to see what it works with.Β

Here are some generic ideas for characters? Mainly trying to think what sort of flavour their drinks would be.

Zecora.
Something spicy? Strong contrasting flavours in a layered B/W striped drink perhaps? Slightly thicker to make it easy to layer? For a dose of that mysterious Zebra Magic.

Princess Cadance.
Something pink ang girly, to give that soft, warm and fuzzy feel inside. Nothing overly sweet though or complicated though. Could be creamy or translucent, depends on the ingredients.

Queen Chrysalis.
Something in her colour, deceptive but irresistible. To send you under her spell (or the table) in no time.

King Sombra.
A dark swirling mist in a glass. Something slightly translucent and cloudy.Β Hmmm... I might have an idea but that requires some... experimenting. This will probably be... scary.

And of course, Discord but that might involve... chocolate (marshmallow) rain. >_>

Other support characters worth a drink could be: Steven Magnet, Trouble Shoes, Cranky and Matilda, And if there is a way to create a drink with all CMC characters that would be... interesting to say the least.

Very much in support of the Part 2 idea. this chart could use some updates. Maybe also a slightly bigger res for this one,
hard to make out everything from the small res one (on a 1920x1080 res) and when you zoom the letters go all blocky.

Some suggestions for the next version though:
- Some measurements
- Serving glassware? (Shot, "On the Rocks-glass", Highball, Collins, Hurricane, Snifter, Wine glass, pint glass etc. etc.)
Β  Helps with estimating the drink size.
- Garnish suggestions if any.
- Some substitute list in case something can not be found.

You have done excellent job with these so far, I'll be sure to have a look and browse for more additions into my bar. It has been far too empty lately...
I usually restock it once or twice a year, adding some new varieties every time, and now is the time for that.

Ooooh... That suggestion for Sombra has got my brain moving. It may be hard to track down though, which is a concern...

But oooh, dude I've already got some great ideas!! Gonna try to base a few off of pre-existing cocktails, just so I can try to make measurements and presentation consistent, while also being thematic.Β

Oh, dear. I think I got carried away acquiring some ingredients. My current bar contents is now... "If you have to ask how much it was you can't afford it".
www.dropbox.com/s/5u8n0j743o1p…
However... I may have run out of space there so it got a bit too cramped to my liking. I will fix that when I get a new shelf for it (the old one was lost in the move).

The photo is still Missing Sprite, Energy drinks, tomato juice, a whole pineapple, the pineapple juice, limes, lemons, and so o. apple juice, pear and apple ciders and various soft drinks and mixers.
Planning to use the ripe pineapple to make my own pineapple vodka for New Years... and the pineapple chunks will be glorious then too.
Pro tip: To estimate the ripeness of a pineapple, pull the leaves on top. If they come out easily then it is pretty much ready to use. Also the smell helps a little.

Oh boy... That will last me until the next time I top-up my bar... which is sometime next summer or later methinks.

Ooooh, you have Campari! Hang onto that, cuz I've got a little something planned for Sombra. Something that also involves lovely smokey Mezcal. I guess a smokier Scotch would also work, but the flavor profile would be different.Β

Already got rough drafts of drinks for Cadence, Discord, Tree Hugger, and Sunset Shimmer. Starlight, Chrysalis, Shining, and Zecora are also coming, but they're proving more difficult. Β

I highly doubt that everyone is going to have everything needed for every drink. That'd just be insane, and expensive. I figure the more variety I throw out there, the greater chance of people finding flavors they like.Β

SoanoS In reply to superwaffle350 [2016-12-23 19:53:55 +0000 UTC]

Tried Royal Treatment, it has potential but I'd need proportions and measures to nail it. Also I think I messed up a little by getting "extra creamy" coconut milk. The result was quite thick, very rich coconut-flavour and creamy, more like a milkshak. So, yeah, I think I put in too much of that. Better luck net round... May take a couple of tries to nail it. Another contributing factor might be that my pineapple vodka is still infusing so I used pineapple juice+vodka instead..

superwaffle350 In reply to SoanoS [2016-12-24 03:24:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the issue with replacing flavored booze with booze and flavorings is that it often turns out sweeter than it ought to be, and the viscosity gets thrown off.Β

One thing to mention; I've said it in the comments before, but yeah, I'll fully admit that I've never made a ONE of these cocktails. This is all from my mind and what I think MIGHT work. That's why there aren't any proportions or measurements. Β There's no way I could afford all of these ingredients.Β

I'm still amazed that people are willing to try them, and they actually find them good!Β

If you find a set of proportions that work for you, or any ingredients that just don't work, I'd love to hear it! I get enough input from people, and I can revise this chart.Β

SoanoS In reply to superwaffle350 [2016-12-24 22:13:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. With Royal Treatment I should have added more pineapple and sprite, and then cut down the coconut *cream* because the recipe was for coconut milk.
The viscosity was not a problem though, the sprite however made it expand some as it started to fizz inside the thick coconut cream. But as I said, the flavour was a bit rich.
Not unpleasant mind you.

With Lunar Eclipse I tried 1 part Creme de Cassis, 1 part Chambord, 2 parts Merlot, and the end result was not bad, but VERY sweet and sugary. Even adding Merlot didn't do much to it.
I would probably try adding some sparkling water or mineral water, or a splash of some strong spirit, vanilla liquor or a dash of lemon juice to offset the sweetness a little bit.
There seems to be a more "official" version of this drink going around, which is 50/50 mix of Baja Luna and Vanilla liqueur, which actually sounds pretty good.

Lunar vision... Well, I tried the Hpnotiq substitute. That worked okay, but the end result was a little too bitter to my tastes. I think I used a little too much tonic water.
Personally I'd replace it with a small dash of dry gin and top off with lemonade or similar. Cranberry might work well but that will make the colour more purple than blue though.

I found out Creme de Cassis tastes like blackcurrant cordial, just like my late mother used to make from fresh blackcurrants...
In a pinch you can use Ribena/blackcurrant cordial and add alcohol to your desired strength.

Gah. Now I need a drink.
I wish the ingredients were freezer-cold though, would be so much better.

Ow my head...
Spent all day, erm, "experimenting".
I think I might be onto something with this one.
The version above is the one I made, below it is a hypotethical "proper" version.

---------
Edit: Found a workable proportions for a Royal Treatment:

Use a 250ml (8.8fl.oz) Hurricane glass or similar. Tulip beer glass work too.

First: The pineapple juice and vodka version:
2 measures (2x 3/4 fl.oz, or around 2x 22ml-ish) vodka,
2 measures (2x 3/4 fl.oz or around 44ml total or so) of pineapple whole juice
1 measure (3/4 fl.oz) Triple sec,Β
2 measures (2x 3/4 fl.oz, about 2x22ml-ish) coconut cream/milk
Mix well
Top up with Sprite carefully and stir because there will be some foam on top.
Β
or
2 measures of pineapple-infused vodka.
1 measure (3/4 fl.oz) Triple sec,
2 measures (3/4 fl.oz, about 44ml or so) coconut cream/milk
Top up with Sprite carefully while stirring because there will be some foam on top.

I garnished my glass with 'Tia's favourite fruit, or berry in botanical terms: A slice of banana.

A cocktail shaker would have made the task easier (adding the sprite in the glass last),
and pouring over crushed ice in a larger similarly shaped glass would probably make this a real treat on a hot summer day.
The coconut ice-cream would probably be more than enough though.
Vanilla ice cream would probably work a treat as well because coconut milk adds plenty of flavour in my opinion, and you can always pour in more.
Also, I think it is worth testing this with a generic store-brand lemon-lime drink. Sprite tasted a little too sweet to my own taste.
It is also worth noting I used a measure with imperial units which made my measurements a little accurate.
With metric units use 25ml for one measure and 50ml for double for easier measuring. (a shot = 25ml) (www.wikihow.com/Understand-Coc… )

Really need to get myself a metric jigger...

Yeah, I think I'd sub out the tonic water for just soda water. No quinine, no bitter after taste.Β

And yeah, I need to tweak those Luna recipes. I thought they might be too heavy or sweet.Β

For the Lunar Vision, I think Hypnotiq, lemon juice, and maybe some sloe gin.Β
For the Eclipse, maybe a Merlot, maybe a Cab Sav. There's a such thing as blackberry Merlot. And yeah, lemon and vanilla would be really nice in that.Β

Thanks for the proportions too! I'll for sure add that to the revised chart.Β

SoanoS In reply to superwaffle350 [2016-12-25 22:15:27 +0000 UTC]

Hm. I think the 2 measures of vodka is a little much after all, considering the number of shots in the drink.
So it might be better to cut it down by a half-shot, call it a lite-version if you will.
Additionally the vodka flavour will be less obvious, which makes it an easier drink to handle for an untrained alcoholic.
A word of warning, this drink is a treacherous one, it just grew on me and I am on my second one already...

Definitely making more of this tomorrow...

Just a quick update.

Some observations I have made:

I tested the Royal Treatment with "proper" coconut milk instead of coconut cream today.
The resulting drink was not quite as smooth. Coconut milk also started to foam more.
But this does not mean the drink came out bad.
Not at all. It was still quite nice. Just slightly different in texture and flavour.
I personally prefer the heavier, creamier and thicker texture and feel so theΒ Coconut Cream is my favourite.
A store brand lemon/lime soft drink works well to replace Sprite if you are on a budget,
And in my case, it turned out even better than the "real thing", thanks to being a little less sweet.
(I personally find Sprite way too sweet to my taste.)

Lunar Eclipse works well with following measurements/ingredients:
1 measure (20ml) Baja Luna (or chambord)
1 measure (20ml) Creme de Cassis (or Blackcurrant cordial to lower alcohol content/cost if needed)
2 measures (40ml) Merlot
2 measures (40ml) sparkling carbonated (or plain) spring water.

The water smoothes the flavours out nicely and tones down sweetness. Using flavoured mineral water might be interesting.
The end result is not bad at all.

I just had a crazy idea: I think Lunar Eclipse would even work as a hot drink too (after-ski drink to warm up in the winter),
just make sure it is only heated and not allowed to boil, and served from a mulled wine glass.Β

I don't have mezcal around, but I do have some smokier whiskey.
Ever heard of... Β tar liquor? Oh, boy. I really forgot about that one.
The flavour on that is very potent because of the pine extract.
Definitely will have to give that a try that at some point.

I agree, having everything might not be feasible for most of us. But sometimes there are a few who go all nuts...
No, I am perfectly sane, stop looking at me like that.

Some of these'll really sneak up on ya and before you know it, you'll be doing bad karaoke versions of '90s pop hits on the kitchen table. If you're just starting out, I recommend the Royal Treatment. Hold off on the Sundae unless you know you like and can handle whisky. The cocktail itself is okay, but that Scotch packs a punch.
