Zanzibar is an island in the proximity of Eastern Africa, in the Indian Ocean. It is part of the Tanzania federation, which comprises the mainland, Tanganyika, and the island of Zanzibar. The two had been unified under the name "Tan-zania" in 1964 after their independence from Great Britain.

Zanzibar used to be the seat of the historical Oman State and the centre of African slavery. Thus, it became a colorful mixture, with the Islamic religion being the unifying force. Unlike the mainland, it is 99% Muslim. It has its own parliament.
