I missed the Tomcats on the NIMITZ by a few years or so. Airwing ELEVEN had converted to the Superhornets by their 2005 deployment with NIMITZ, and I was onboard for the 2007 deployment. Really wish I could have seen the Tomcats doing flight operations on the carrier!

Wow didnt know that, and cool you had some time on such a famous carrier.
I belive my grandfather had some desgin work he did for the Tomcat, not sure what but it was out of Point Magoo.
I like the wings of the plane how they reacted to the flight and mine work with folding in and out.

Yep - the Tomcat is a great aircraft. Cool that you have family that is a part of her creation! Don't think the Navy will have aircraft quite like it again. She was designed as an interceptor only, and everything has to be multi-purpose these days...

The idea of a all in one like a smart phone, I like it better with the desgin in mind to have a single desgin be the best desgin for its style of operation, in example to me is the A-10 Warthog, really a flying tank that is almost like the old Skyradier but better.
All in ones is a nice idea to save money and stremline matintence but does that come at a faulure to excel at its given task?
Yeah my gandfather has alot of fun stories about his time desgining for the Navy, old Korean war vet of the USS Paul.

True - just look at all of the problems we have with development of the F-35. The old A-6 Intruders were deep strike bombers for the Navy, which we gave up when we went to the F/18 "A" and "C" models. Although the A-6 was not supersonic, it could go farther and carry a greater payload. Now with the Superhornet, Navy strike aircraft have longer legs, but the Superhornets are not as manueverable as the older "legacy" hornets.

'sorry for the late reply'
Yes the F-35 is a great step forward but we had amazing planes that worked well for thier jobs already.
I guess its a 'Stay ahead of the game' thing, but if the plane works well i guess the parts and such are easy to get and the crews only need to know one plane, and the old fleet can make up if the F-35 cant do thier jobs as well.
Cool history lesson i didnt know much about, Thanks!

I think you are right that it really is a "stay ahead of the game" thing that both the F-35 and the F-22 represent. Now adays it seems that we should accept the fact that as a nation, we can't continue to fund aircraft like this that go way way over budget and result in purchasing far few numbers that originally intended. Stealth technology is great and all but if you can only afford to buy 200 fighters - that you can't use in the type of conflicts we find ourself in (Afghanistan/Iraq) - doesn't make much sense.

True the bloated spending is outrageous, i use to own stock in Boeing and thier annual spending was crazy, Stock never did much for me tho. For Tax payers the amount used on warfare is crazy now, we dont want a repeat of pre-WWII with being under armed but we dont want to be a world police either...more of secerity for our land.
And yeah if the planes cost so much to not only plan and make thier operating and loss is rather high id think. Maintian one well its used for its life but if a part goes bad and it has to be ditched thats a muti-milion dollar loss in one shot of tax payers.
More A-10s i say! Ha, Ha, Ha!

at that time,no. i was a "greenshirt"{catapult/arresting gear crew} it was the first tim ethe F-14 was used in anger in US hands in the Gulf Of Sidra Incident. but the Iranians certainly got a lot of good service and scored many kills with their "Ali-Cats"!
