Thanks--I like to try and incorporate some different styles, and something simple and graphic seemed perfect for a pic inspired by this show.

I didn't miss this going up by too much! So, I suppose this piece is still on your mind.

As much as I like the newest version of Velma, I kinda wish your version could be made official! (With you getting necessary credit, of course!)

surrealgreen In reply to DeeAyAich [2010-09-25 17:13:18 +0000 UTC]

Ha! Me too--I do like the new designs, but I hate how they've changed the gang's personalities for the new show. And how they've made pretty much everyone not in the gang an idiot. I miss Velma, the smart, mystery-oriented nerd who is absolutely not ashamed of being a nerd.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DeeAyAich In reply to surrealgreen [2010-09-25 23:08:35 +0000 UTC]

That's just it, though! The only thing that set Velma apart from the rest of the gang originally was the glasses. They all had brains, and in that sense they were all nerds. Velma just looked the part better than Daphne, who I always thought was just as brilliant.

Of course, you can't have the pretty one be smart and the "frumpy" one be sweet and personable! That would throw our worlds into disarray!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

surrealgreen In reply to DeeAyAich [2010-09-26 21:37:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I disagree. They were all smart, but original Velma was the smartest--the unapologetic science nerd. They all had their things--Fred was the leader, and usually the planner, Daphne was the people person (and, yes, the pretty one), Shaggy and Scooby seemed to always be the ones putting the plans into action, and Velma was the one who put the clues together and figured it out. And I always found Velma to be sweet and personable--in fact, my biggest gripe with the new show is that they've made Velma into the clingy, bossy girlfriend, something original Velma would neer have been. Ugh!(although I do like the fact that they've made her cuter, and I agree with you about her original design).

I do like the new Daphne, who seems stronger than original Daphne, expect for the fact that she is so desperately crushing on Fred, something original Daphne had way too much panache to do. As for new Fred--he's kind of an idiot. Orignial Fred wasn't. Shaggy and Scooby haven't changed, thankfully--those two seem to be the touchstones that link all of the various versions of the gang.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DeeAyAich In reply to surrealgreen [2010-09-26 21:54:28 +0000 UTC]

Ah! I understand perfectly now. She was indeed the nerd back then, even. I was just getting a bit confused by seeing their different types of intelligence as pretty much just plain ol' intelligence!

Panache is a perfect word to describe Daphne! Not so much danger prone--just recklessly courageous! (She had to pay for it a few times! )

My old Velma forum friends had a theory that those four were too close as friends to think about dating one another. They'd all have boyfriends and girlfriends somewhere outside the group and away from their snooping. The last thing the original Mystery Inc. gang would've done is made themselves vulnerable by exposing their loved ones to the kind of danger they get into! (If the new gang didn't figure that out by the way Fred fell apart when Daphne was captured recently, I don't think they ever will!)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

surrealgreen In reply to DeeAyAich [2010-10-24 04:19:59 +0000 UTC]

I don't know, I would say Daphne is danger prone--not her fault, and I actually find it a bit endearing. She's brave, but a bit of a klutz and has a talent for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Poor Daphne!

I agree with your old forum friends, to a degree. I honestly don't think the original gang was all that interested in romance. They were more focused on solving mysteries. I don't so much mind the idea of them pairing up among themselves (after all, they do spend alot of time together, and that could lead to a little romance), except that I have yet to see it done well. Especially Shaggy/Velma--they get paired up by default, but I don't think they'd be interested in each other that way.

Still, while I'm glad that the new series is working to build their characters up a bit, I hate the way they've had the girls crushing so depserately on the oblivious boys. Poor Velma and Daphne. Femslash doesn't normally rock my boat, but this is one fandom where I could definately see it!

DeeAyAich In reply to surrealgreen [2010-10-24 23:08:54 +0000 UTC]

I understand perfectly the idea of them pairing up. Come to think of it, from my own experiences, I've felt attracted to friends I've spent a lot of time around. The nervous chuckles about feeling like brother and sister barely covered true feelings on anyones' part at all, come to think of it.

I'm sure Fred and Velma--who I think showed indications of being an item sometimes!--might've shared the same chuckle. Imagine the scene from one of the Harlem Globetrotters episodes. Fred caught Velma before she could fall down a trap door, and didn't let go of her right away! I could imagine their hearts skipping beats while he held her (frankly, a moment or two too long as I recall!) and perhaps Velma rationalizing, "Gee! What's the deal? Fred's like a brother to me! I shouldn't feel like this in his arms!"

Yes, I do see that luck and physical coordination play a major role in Daphne's predicaments. Then again, I remember Fred falling through a week spot in a floor and ending up covered in flour! She wasn't the only danger prone one in the beginning! (Of course, I think it was Fred who called her "Danger prone Daphne" first. I noticed by your most recent journal entry that you're a Masters' level psychologist! ..."Projection much, Freddie?"

The writers on this new show do seem to be drubbing the points about the girls' crushes being nearly hopeless. There isn't quite as much time devoted to Shaggy and Fred revealing their feelings about Vel and Daph--but it still happens...More with Fred than Shaggy. I'm not too wild about the idea that boys' emotions aren't quite as strong as girls' .... From experience, again, I'll have to differ! I've had some pretty strong feelings before, and some deep regrets that I never expressed them.

surrealgreen In reply to DeeAyAich [2010-10-25 02:40:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, if I were to go for a het pairing on the show, it would be Fred/Velma. I do like the idea of the type A, cute guy going for the nerdy girl. Fred/Daphne is just a bit too Barbie and Ken for my taste. Fred/Velma has possiblities. Although, not in the new show, I think.

I agree, in the original show they all had their share of danger-prone moments (my glasses, my glasses!). Alot of the more stereotypical ideas come from the 90's version. And the fandom, of course!

I just feel so sorry for Daphne and Velma sometimes in the new show. They are trying so hard, but they are also going about it exactly the wrong way. Daphne's waiting for Fred to recognize that he has feelings for her, and Velma--well I don't know what's up with Velma. That's the part that bothers me most--they have her telling Shaggy what to wear, what to eat, what to say! Making him choose between her and Scooby. So out of character for Velma! Honestly, now that he's chosen Scooby (gah! poor Velma), I'm hoping the show will back away from the pairings!

I also kind of feel sorry for the boys, of course. Fred really seems to be out of touch with reality (of all the gang, he's the worst written--he's supposed to be a smart guy, not a trap obsessed idiot)! I really hope they just focus on the mysteries for a while.

DeeAyAich In reply to surrealgreen [2010-10-28 23:45:19 +0000 UTC]

I'd say the Barbie/Ken thing would've been a turn-off for the original Fred and Daphne (of course, their writers wouldn't have liked it much, either).

As far as the stereotypical ideas--I'm surprised that the fandom was a source of them. I always thought of the show as being a break from stereotypical expectations. You can't find four more divergent characters hanging out and getting along like these. The type-A cute guy (as you called him!), the beauty queen, the nerdy girl and the anachronistic beatnik--how would these types of people get along in, say, a John Hughes movie? (Not nearly as well as they do in the current version of the Gang, I'd think!)

surrealgreen In reply to DeeAyAich [2010-11-12 05:00:19 +0000 UTC]

I agree--I recently started looking for good fanfiction, and was suprised by how little fanfiction in general there was for the show! I thought there'd be a huge archive somewhere, but if there is, I haven't found it. What I have found seems intent on pairing them off like they're about to take a ride on the ark, Daphne/Fred and Shaggy/Velma.

But by 'stereotypical', I meant stereotypical for the show, not real life. For example, the idea that Daphne is more danger-prone than the others, or that Fred only sets traps, etc. Back in the original series, things weren't quite so set (although I do believe that's where Fred coined the saying "danger-prone Daphne").

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DeeAyAich In reply to surrealgreen [2010-11-18 21:46:44 +0000 UTC]

There is still good fanfiction out there. None of it, probably, is all that new. (The last really good fan stories I've read are about 6-8 years old!)

Ah, yes! The show fell into internal patterns--stereotypes, definitely! And, I think I remember Fred's exact phrase, "Wouldn't you know it? Danger-prone Daphne's done it again!"
